CHARLESTON, S.C. ?
The Presbyterian College softball team was unable to keep
its win streak going as the squad was defeated twice by Charleston Southern Friday afternoon in a Big
South doubleheader. Game scores were 9-0 and 4-0.
The Blue Hose fall to 11-12 on the season and now stand 1-2 in Big South play. The Lady Bucs
improve to 18-18 overall and 4-1 against conference competition.
Neither
game went the way head coach Dave Majeski wanted.
In game
one, a fielder's choice brought home the contest's first run, giving the home
team a 1-0 advantage after the first inning of play. The run would eventually
be enough.
Every inning after the first, the home team would put runners on base. However,
the Blue Hose defense continued to keep the squad at bay. In the second, the
team got a fielder's choice to end the inning with the bases loaded. The third
frame featured two runners left on base before a groundout ended the threat.
However,
things caught up to PC in the fourth inning as an error allowed for one
unearned run. CSU played small ball with the big hit of the inning being a
two-run single. The Lady Bucs would eventually get five runs on three hits
while leaving the bases loaded in the frame before Mary Gordon struck the last
two batters of the inning out.
The Blue
Hose would get just a single through the left side by Becca Caldwell as the only
other base runner the squad would have in the game from that point forward.
Caldwell and Krysten Handy each had a base hit while Brittany Howell earned a
walk.
Gordon took
the loss, throwing four innings while giving up six runs (five earned) on seven
hits. She walked four and struck out five.
Game two
started out better for PC, but the squad was unable to convert on some key
early opportunities.
In the
first, Howell was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with two away. Taylor
Staten had reached on an error while Rachel Parker had singled up the middle.
However, Ashley Ford struck out to end the best threat of the day.
Howell went to work in the circle and despite an error, got out of the first
unscathed.
PC left two
runners on base in the second frame. With one away, Amanda Miller doubled to
left center, but was eventually cut down on a fielder's choice, which ended the
inning.
A one-out
triple in the third frame gave CSU a 2-0 advantage. The team would tack on a
run later in the stanza, giving it a 3-0 lead. Then, after PC was unable to
bring Laura Tate Owings home after a two-out double, the Lady Bucs plated
another run in the fourth for a 4-0 advantage.
Despite
giving up just one run, Howell took the loss for the Blue Hose. She went 2.1
innings while allowing a mere hit and one earned run. She walked one and struck
out one.
Leslie
Hensley went 3.2 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits. She
did not walk a batter and struck out one.
For the
game, PC gave up four runs on six hits. The Blue Hose tallied five hits in the
contest.
Kayla
Handy, Parker, Howell, Miller and Tate Owings all had one hit in the game. Miller
and Owings both reached on doubles.
The teams
return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m., in the final game of the
three-game set.
