GREENVILLE, S.C. ? The Presbyterian College softball
team split a pair of games with nearby Furman Wednesday afternoon. The Blue
Hose won the first game 4-1 before falling 5-0 in game two.
PC stands at 8-6 on the young season.
The Blue Hose extended their winning streak to seven games with the 4-1 win in
game one. After a scoreless first frame, PC jumped on top by plating two runs
in the second. With two outs in the inning, Ashley Ford drew a walk and moved
to second on Krysten Handy's single through the left side.
Sophomore Brittany Howell then drilled a double to right field, scoring both
Ford and Handy, allowing the visitors to take a 2-0 lead.
Leslie Hensley, who gave up a bloop hit in the first inning, shut down the side
in both the second and third frames.
By holding down the fort, Hensley gave her team another at bat in which to
widen their margin in the fourth stanza.
Ford led off the inning by reaching on a throwing error by the third baseman.
She was then removed for pinch runner. Erin Stewart, who came in for Ford,
moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Krysten Handy. Howell then came up big,
this time doubling to left center for a 3-0 advantage.
After an out, Amanda Miller strode to the plate and sliced a single up the
middle, scoring Howell and giving head coach Dave Majeski's team a 4-0 stake.
The Blue Hose gave up a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the team shut down
the Paladins the remainder of the way.
Hensley garnered her sixth win of the season after tossing seven innings of
three-hit ball. She struck out six without allowing a base on balls.
For the game, PC had just four hits, but the team made it count by plating four
RBI.
The second game was not as kind to the Blue Hose. PC and Furman played even through
the first four frames, but the Paladins touched Majeski's squad for four runs
in the fifth, all of which were unearned on two Blue Hose miscues.
It was not until the sixth stanza that PC managed to get a player to second
base. With one out, Taylor Staten doubled to right center, but the Blue Hose
were unable to get her home as the next two batters did not get the ball out of
the infield.
Furman tacked on a run in the sixth for what turned out to be the 5-0 win.
PC had five hits in the game. Staten, Hensley, Howell, Lindsey Trombley and
Mary Gordon each had a base knock in the contest.
The Blue Hose return to action on Wednesday, March 11, when they play host to
Appalachian State in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
