CLINTON, S.C. ? The
Presbyterian College softball team lost its last two home games of the season,
coming at the hands of Furman Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Hose lost by scores
of 12-0 and 11-2.
PC now stands at 18-24 on the season.
In game one, the Paladins jumped on top with a solo homerun on the first pitch
of the second inning and tacked on a run in the second and third frames for a
3-0 advantage. During that time, head coach Dave Majeski's team managed just
one base runner. It was not until the fourth inning when PC came through with a
base knock.
Krysten Handy was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Then, with one down,
Rachel Parker got the first base hit of the contest for the home team. Leslie
Hensley singled to load the bases. However, Furman's hurler was able to get
Mary Gordon to strike out and forced Laura Tate Owings into a fairly deep fly
ball to end the threat.
Furman
added three runs in the fifth and ended the game early when the team plated six
runs in the sixth for the 12-0 win.
Hensley
(10-8) worked five frames, giving up six runs on nine hits. She walked one
while striking out seven. Brittany Howell tossed the final inning. She
surrendered six runs, two of which were earned.
Things
started out rough for PC in the second game. The Paladins tallied a run in the
first and two in the second to go up 3-0. However, the Blue Hose battled back.
In the
third, Stephanie Payne singled to right center. Amanda Miller then blasted a
pitch over the left field fence, pulling the team within one, 3-2. Tate Owings
doubled, but the team was unable to bring her in.
After that, the Paladins' bats heated up while PC was unable to get another hit
in the contest.
With the
score still at 3-2 in the fifth, three home runs
accounted for all five runs in the inning. Furman added three runs in the sixth
off the long ball, ending the contest with the score 11-2.
Gordon
(6-15) took the loss. She worked 5.1 innings, giving up 10 runs (eight earned).
She struck out six while walking one. Erin Stewart came in for the final
two-thirds of the sixth. She gave up one run on one hit.
The Blue Hose return to action Friday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va. The team will play a
doubleheader at Liberty beginning at 2 p.m.
