Blue Hose Give Highlanders First Big South Loss

CLINTON, S.C. ? The Presbyterian College softball team hit two homers against Radford Sunday afternoon en route to the 4-3 win.

The Blue Hose now stand at 15-16 on the season and 3-6 in Big South Conference play. The Highlanders fall to 22-9 on the year and 5-1 against league competition.

Leading the way for PC was Taylor Staten, who had two hits, including a two-run homer. Amanda Miller had one hit while scoring twice. Morgan White had a solo blast. Katie Anderson and Rachel Parker each collected hits.

PC had the lead in the early going, scoring an unearned run in the first. Miller led things off with a single and moved to second on Krysten Handy's sacrifice bunt. She came around to score when Anderson hit a ball to short and reached safely on an error. The Highlanders' miscue gave the Blue Hose a 1-0 lead.

Radford plated two runs in the third when Michele Beall and Leigh Godfrey scored. Beall led off with a walk and scored on Godfrey's single. She moved to second on the throw and eventually stole home before PC was able to get out of the frame.

The Blue Hose regained the lead in the bottom half of the stanza. With one away, Miller reached base for the second time, earning a walk. With two away, Staten launched a two-run bomb on a full count, giving the home team a 3-2 lead. The four-bag base hit was her eighth round-tripper of the season.

White blasted a solo homer over the center field fence with one away in the fourth, increasing the lead to two, 4-2.

Radford struck in the sixth. Nichole Beall's single to center drove home Godfrey, who had led off the inning with a single. The Highlanders continued to threaten by loading the bases, but head coach Dave Majeski's team responded with a double play to end the inning.

Leslie Hensley went the distance, pitching a complete game. She gave up three runs on six hits while striking out four. Hensley improves to 9-5 on the season.

The Blue Hose return to action Wednesday when they play host to Winthrop in a Big South Conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
