Clinton, S.C. - Presbyterian College women's soccer utilized a 56th minute goal to sink The Citadel, 1-0 on Friday night at PC's Martin Stadium. After opening the season with a trio of defeats, the Blue Hose have rallied with a pair of home wins. The Citadel falls to 2-3 on the season.
"I am particularly pleased to pull out a win over a solid Citadel team tonight especially after such a tough week," said head coach Brian Purcell. "Considering a week ago that we were coming back from a tough loss to Mercer, I'm happy with the way we are playing as a unit."
Prior to the match, there was a moment of silence to remember the victims and first responders from the September 11th attacks.
The teams worked the ball around the midfield for the majority of the first half with each team making probing runs but lacking sustained attacks. The Bulldogs outshot PC 4-3 in the opening 45 minutes.
The Blue Hose was able to pressure the Bulldog defense into a mistake on 57 minutes when Emily Davis made a run down the channel and delivered the ball into the net to put the hosts on top, 1-0. Her second goal of the season was unassisted.
The Blue Hose killed off the final 33 minutes of the match with a team defensive effort that preserved the combined clean sheet for goalkeepers.
Senior Abby Young started the match and played the first half making one save on four shots. In the second half, Sara Beth Anderson made two saves on six Bulldog shots to earn the first shutout of the season for PC.
Presbyterian College will travel to play Francis Marion on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Blue Hose will look to tie the program's longest Division I winning streak against the Patriots.
