Rock Hill, S.C. - Presbyterian College men's soccer fell
behind early and could not recover on Tuesday night against Winthrop to fall to
1-7 on the season and 0-2 in Big South play.
The visiting Blue Hose conceded three goals in the first half but closed
the gap to two with an early goal in the second half. However, the rally couldn't be sustained over
the final minutes and PC ultimately lost, 3-1.
"It was a tough match tonight," said assistant coach Brandon
Tucker. "We fell behind early tonight
but despite our best efforts, we weren't able to complete the comeback. The fellas worked hard, they played well, but
there is always room for improvement."
The Eagles (6-2, 1-0) went ahead in the 22nd
minute as Said Abdi scored from 12 yards.
He was assisted by Matthew Skonicki.
Winthrop went two in front two minutes later when Miquel
Casajuana's through ball pass knifed Adam Skonicki free onto goal. Skonicki netted the shot from 14 yards on the
angle.
The task was made tougher in the 39th minute when
Winthrop extended the lead to 3-0. Adam
Skonicki was fed by his brother Matthew for their fourth and second points of
the night, respectively.
The Blue Hose cut into the lead only eight minutes after
halftime when Sam Eastridge netted his first career goal on a one-timer from
just inside the six yard box. Manning Rushton and Davis
Orders assisted on the play.
The Blue Hose poured men forward over the remainder of the
period but could not muster a second goal late.
James Neal made the start for PC in goal and made three
saves and allowing all three goals.
Andrew Wallingford relieved Neal at halftime and posted two saves while
keeping a second half clean sheet.
The Blue Hose will return home to face Radford on Saturday
afternoon. The Big South Conference
match begins at 2 p.m. from beautiful Martin Stadium on the campus of
