CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College men's
soccer earned a much needed victory over Georgia Southern, 1-0 on Tuesday night
at Martin Stadium. PC scored on the
first shot of the game just 1:52 into the match and never looked back to take
the well-deserved victory.
PC improves to
2-8-1 on the year while the Eagles fall to 3-7-1.
"It feels
great to get a win tonight," said head coach Bret Boulware. "Georgia Southern played a heck of a game and
forced us to defend for long stretches but we were up for the challenge tonight."
The Blue Hose
snapped an eight-game losing streak with a goal from the first shot struck in
anger. In the second minute of play,
Donald Gibson played a long-ball from near midfield to the area of the penalty
spot. The ball bounced once and was
headed towards goal by Stephen Glover.
The ball found its way over the GSU goalkeeper and dipped under the
crossbar to give PC an early 1-0 lead.
The goal for
Glover is his third this season and puts him in the team scoring lead.
The teams
played attractive end-to-end soccer for the first half with both teams earning
numerous chances. The Eagles finished
the first half leading in shots by a 9-4 margin but PC held a 2-1 lead in corner
kicks.
Out of the
intermission, Georgia Southern ratcheted up the pressure with two shots in the
first five minutes before Nico Fazio could muster an effort on goal in the 53rd
minute.
In the 70th
minute, Georgia Southern delivered its most promising attempt of the
night. Austin Gaso rifled a shot which
swerved left then right before clanging the crossbar and going out for a goal
kick.
In the 77th
minute, Luke Ade came just inches from doubling the advantage as his
well-struck shot went just inches high of the upper corner of the goal.
Overall, the
PC defense would weather the onslaught of 15 shots and eight shots on goal in
the second half to secure the victory.
James Neal
went the distance for the Blue Hose in goal for PC's first shutout of the
season. He made 12 saves on the night as
he stood tough through a barrage of 24 total shots.
PC continues
the two-match homestand on Friday night against Liberty. The Big South match starts at 6 p.m. from
Martin Stadium and opens an exciting Homecoming Weekend.
