CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College took an
early lead but two goals down the stretch gave Liberty a 2-1 win over the Blue Hose
on Friday night at Martin Stadium. PC
took the lead on 36 minutes but a 41st minute penalty followed by a
second Liberty goal in the 64th minute was the difference in the
match.
PC falls to
2-9-1 in the defeat and 0-5-0 in the Big South.
Liberty improves to 7-6-1 and 3-2-0 in league play.
After a
scoreless opening half hour, Logan Huff put the Blue Hose up 1-0 with a header
from the penalty spot. The senior
captain scored for the third time on the season in the 36th minute
off a service from Jonny Mercado who redirected a corner kick which went
through the box. The goal puts Huff into
a tie with Stephen Glover for the team scoring lead.
Liberty drew
level just a few minutes later when a foul in the box gave the Flames a penalty
kick. Uriah Bentick was successful on
the spot kick, hitting the ball into the lower right corner of the net.
The teams went
into the intermission tied at 1-1. The
Blue Hose led the shots race, 9-7 while Liberty tallied four corners to PC's
one.
After nearly
20 minutes of play in the second half, Liberty posted the game winning goal in
the 64th minute when Juan F. Nino got a hold of a turnover in the
penalty area and scored the decisive goal for the Flames.
PC logged just
four shots in the second half with none in the final 10 minutes of play. The Flames took control of the waning minutes
with four shots and three corner kicks after the 80th minute.
Liberty
finished the night with a 20-13 lead in shots and a 9-3 advantage in corner
kicks.
PC's
goalkeeper, James Neal made eight saves in the match including six in the
second half. PC delivered a total of
five shots on goal with Liberty logging four saves.
PC closes out
the home portion of the 2010 schedule on Oct. 23 against High Point at Martin
Stadium. Liberty faces Gardner-Webb next
time out on Oct. 19.
