Long-Range Goal Gives Gardner-Webb a 2-1 Win Over PC

CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College women's soccer looked poised to earn no less than a draw on Friday night at Martin Stadium but an unfortunate mistake gave Gardner-Webb a 2-1 win over PC.  The Blue Hose took the lead in the 27th minute but the Bulldogs equalized in the 28th minute on a goal off a rebound.  GWU sealed the victory against the run of play just seven minutes from the horn.

PC's (5-10-1, 2-4-1 BSC) first chance of the match came as Stephanie Allen (Augusta, Ga.) took a speculative effort on goal from 35 yards out in the 10th minute.  The long effort arched high and nearly dipped under the crossbar but instead landed on the top netting for a goal kick.

PC opened the scoring when Rebecca Miller (Pauline S.C.) redirected a Tori Lopez (Snellville, Ga.) free kick into the net on 27 minutes.  Miller's third goal of the season put her into a tie for the team scoring lead.

Just 44 seconds after the restart, Gardner-Webb (5-8-3, 2-3-1 BSC) marched down the field and leveled the teams at 1-1.  A shot off the crossbar by Megan Reimer was rebounded by Stephanie Benshoof who scored from inside the six yard box on an empty net.  Benshoof's goal was her first of the season.

In the 83rd minute, Gardner-Webb scored the game winning goal as Jessica Casper won a loose header at the midfield stripe and unleashed a high, speculative shot from 45 yards.  The ball was initially corralled by PC's goalkeeper, Jordan Broadway (Chapin, S.C.), but the ball fell from her fingertips and landed in the goal for GWU's second of the night.  The Casper goal was her second of the season.

The Blue Hose were unable to salvage an equalizer in the waning minutes as the Bulldogs took the 2-1 victory.

There were 40 total shots in the match with Gardner-Webb leading the race, 21-19.  PC led in corners, 5-4 but trailed 9-6 in shots on goal.

Broadway finished the night with seven saves as the freshman was saddled with the two goals.

PC hosts Winthrop on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. for Senior Day at Martin Stadium.  The recognition ceremony for the seniors will start at 1:45 p.m.
