CLINTON, S.C. - The Blue Hose posted an
early goal but surrendered two goals in the final 20 minutes to fall, 2-1 on
Sunday afternoon against Radford. Kate Baker
scored the breakthrough for PC, but the defense was unable to stymie the
barrage of Highlander shots throughout the match. Radford finished the night with 36 total
shots.
The Blue Hose
fall to 4-7-1 overall and an even 1-1 in league play. The loss also snaps a three-match win streak. Radford improves to
8-4-0 and consolidates its lead in the Big South at 2-0.
"We are very disappointed
not to get the victory today," said head coach Brian Purcell. "The team did a great job earning a quick
goal then defending very well. Even
though we didn't get the win today, we learned a lot and the team worked very
hard."
Baker gave the
Blue Hose an early lead with a goal just 4:05 into the match. Stephanie Aaron played the ball to the top of
the box where maker one-touched the ball into a wide area. She struck a left-footed shot from 15-yards
that found the back of the net and gave PC an early 1-0 lead. The goal is Baker's third of the season which
puts her back in the team scoring lead.
Radford's
offense set up shop in the PC end of the field throughout the first half taking
19 shots with goalkeeper Sarah Beth Anderson making nine saves in the opening half
as PC carried a 1-0 lead into the break.
Radford's
pressure continued into the second half and the Highlanders nearly leveled in
the 50th minute when a header off a corner kick hit the crossbar.
In the 73rd
minute, Radford got on the scoreboard with a goal from Mary Wiley. The striker took a shot from the near corner
of the penalty box and finished in the far corner of the net.
Just eight
minutes later, Radford posted the match-winner with a penalty kick in the 81st
minute. Latrice Lee took the spot kick
into the bottom right corner of the goal to give the Highlanders the go-ahead
goal.
PC logged just
one shot in the second half to post two for the match. In comparison, Radford had 36 shots with 16
on frame.
Sarah Beth
Anderson's made 14 saves in the match while allowing two goals. Her streak of consecutive shutouts was
snapped after three matches and a total match time of 353:38.
PC continues its homestand on Friday,
Oct. 8 at home against UNC Asheville. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
