Late Goals Push Radford Past PC, 2-1

CLINTON, S.C. - The Blue Hose posted an early goal but surrendered two goals in the final 20 minutes to fall, 2-1 on Sunday afternoon against Radford.  Kate Baker scored the breakthrough for PC, but the defense was unable to stymie the barrage of Highlander shots throughout the match.  Radford finished the night with 36 total shots.

The Blue Hose fall to 4-7-1 overall and an even 1-1 in league play.  The loss also snaps a three-match win streak.  Radford improves to 8-4-0 and consolidates its lead in the Big South at 2-0.

"We are very disappointed not to get the victory today," said head coach Brian Purcell.  "The team did a great job earning a quick goal then defending very well.  Even though we didn't get the win today, we learned a lot and the team worked very hard."

Baker gave the Blue Hose an early lead with a goal just 4:05 into the match.  Stephanie Aaron played the ball to the top of the box where maker one-touched the ball into a wide area.  She struck a left-footed shot from 15-yards that found the back of the net and gave PC an early 1-0 lead.  The goal is Baker's third of the season which puts her back in the team scoring lead.

Radford's offense set up shop in the PC end of the field throughout the first half taking 19 shots with goalkeeper Sarah Beth Anderson making nine saves in the opening half as PC carried a 1-0 lead into the break.

Radford's pressure continued into the second half and the Highlanders nearly leveled in the 50th minute when a header off a corner kick hit the crossbar.

In the 73rd minute, Radford got on the scoreboard with a goal from Mary Wiley.  The striker took a shot from the near corner of the penalty box and finished in the far corner of the net.

Just eight minutes later, Radford posted the match-winner with a penalty kick in the 81st minute.  Latrice Lee took the spot kick into the bottom right corner of the goal to give the Highlanders the go-ahead goal.

PC logged just one shot in the second half to post two for the match.  In comparison, Radford had 36 shots with 16 on frame.

Sarah Beth Anderson's made 14 saves in the match while allowing two goals.  Her streak of consecutive shutouts was snapped after three matches and a total match time of 353:38.

PC continues its homestand on Friday, Oct. 8 at home against UNC Asheville. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
