ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Presbyterian College women's
tennis team was unable to carry the momentum of its win over Liberty into the
contest against UNC Asheville. Despite fighting hard, the team ultimately lost
by a 7-0 count.
The Blue Hose now stand at 3-10 on the season and 1-2 in Big South play. The
Bulldogs improve to 8-5 on the year and 1-2 against conference competition.
The Bulldogs secured the double point by winning all three matches. Heather
Heusel and Paige Oelke lost an 8-3 battle to Leslie Smith and Stephanie Schon
at No. 1. Megan Davis and Daryl Thompson fell by an identical score at No. 3 to
Britney Cloer and Nichole Schon. The biggest competition of doubles play came at
the No. 2 slot. Olivia McMillan and Virginia Waldron fought Deven Cavanaugh and
Louis Bottomley to an 8-6 score.
In singles play, McMillan went against Smith at the top spot. She pushed Smith
in the first set before falling 7-6. However, Smith was able to win the second
set by a 6-0 count.
At No. 2, Heusel played well against Stephanie Schon. After losing the first
set 6-3, Heusel came back to win the second by a 6-3 score. Schon was able to
pull out the victory after winning the tiebreaker 10-6.
Davis rebounded from a 6-0 loss in the first set at No. 3 to Cavanaugh to take
three points away from her in the second. However, it was not enough, giving
Cavanaugh the win.
Oelke lost a 6-1, 7-5 decision at the No. 4 position to Cloer while Cara Caruso
was unable to duplicate her magnificent performance against the Flames
Saturday. Caruso dropped a 6-0, 7-5 match to Nichole Schon.
In the No. 6 spot, Thompson lost a 6-3, 6-2 battle against Bottomley.
The Blue Hose will look to return to their winning ways Friday when they travel
to Western Carolina.
