CHARLESTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College softball
returned from spring break to take a win over UNC Wilmington (4-2) before
falling to Charleston Southern (5-2) at the Low Country Invitational on Friday
afternoon. Taylor Staten was 5-for-7 at
the plate to pace the Blue Hose offense as PC moved to 7-4 on the season.
In the
opening contest of the day, PC started hot with two runs in each of the first
two innings. Starting pitcher Leslie
Hensley helped her own cause at the plate by knocking in a run in each inning.
The runs
would prove to be enough as Hensley went the distance and kept the Seahawks to
just two runs. She allowed eight hits
but struck out six batters to claim her third win of the season.
In the day's
second game, the Blue Hose were only able to manage two runs against their Big
South Conference foe. Mary Gordon got
the start in the circle and worked two and a third innings in the circle. She allowed one run and three Buccaneer hits
in her stint while striking out four without a walk. Gordon was saddled with the loss to fall to
2-2 on the season. She was relieved by
Brittany Howell who worked four and a third and allowed four runs off six
hits. She fanned five while walking
three.
After CSU
scored once in the first and third innings, PC answered when Staten plated Amanda
Miller. CSU extended the lead to 5-1 in
the sixth with a three-run inning. The
game's second run came in the sixth frame when Rachel Hopper brought Rachel
Parker home via the sacrifice fly. But
it was all PC would get in the game as the Blue Hose suffered their fourth loss
of the season.
The Blue
Hose will close out the Low Country Invitational on Saturday with two more
games. The day opens at 9:30 a.m. when
PC faces Dayton. The weekend's finale
comes at either 1:30 or 3:30 p.m. when PC will play in the bracket phase of the
tournament.
