RADFORD, Va. - Presbyterian College started slow in
the opening game of the day but came on strong in the night-cap but fell short
against Radford 3-0 and 11-10. The
doubleheader sweep takes league-leading Radford to 24-10 and 10-1 in the Big
South while the Blue Hose fall to 13-15 and 1-10 in the league.
Starting
pitcher Brittany Howell tossed a masterful game allowing just three hits on the
day and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. The second batter ended the no-no bid but an
error opened the door for a three-run homer over the centerfield fence.
The PC offense
was unable to answer as Rachel Hopper was the only baserunner after she singled
to shortstop in the third inning.
Radford's
Kelley took the one-hitter victory to improve to 14-5 as Howell took the loss
to fall to 3-2.
In the
second game of the day, Radford continued its string of runs with a run in the
first and two more in the second to take an early 3-0 lead.
The Blue
Hose took their first lead of the series with four runs off five hits and an
error in the third inning. Rachel Hopper
scored off a throwing error before Krysten Handy came home on a ground ball by
Morgan Durham. The third and fourth runs
came off Taylor Staten's fourth home run of the season to plate Tera Powell as
well.
A Radford
run in the bottom of the third tied the game again before a run in the fourth
gave the lead back to the Highlanders at 5-4.
Two runs
came for PC in the top of the sixth as PC benefited from three Radford errors. Taylor Staten reached on an error and moved
to third with another error. She scored
off a wild pitch as Katie Anderson moved to second on the play. Anderson would score later in the inning to
give PC back the lead off a muffed throw by the shortstop. The play prompted Radford to make four
changes to the defense before recording the final out of the inning by
strikeout.
The
Highlanders then scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a
three-run advantage into the final frame at 9-6.
PC answered
the bell in the seventh, scoring four runs in the inning to take a 10-9
lead. Krysten Handy homered to left to start
the inning before a Durham single set the table for Staten to hit her fifth
home run and tie the game again. Lindsey
Trombley singled in the next at bat and was plated on a double to center by Katie Anderson.
Radford came
to bat down by one run in the seventh and started the stanza with a one-out
single to left center. The single opened
the door for Beall to hit a walk-off home run to left.
Mary Gordon
and Leslie Hensley each worked three innings of the game with Gordon starting
and working the first stint. She allowed
four runs, three earned off five hits before giving way for Hensley to open the
fourth. Hensley allowed six runs, five
earned off five hits, striking out two.
Howell came on to work the final inning and nail down the potential
save. Instead, she gave up the two runs
and fell to 3-3 with two losses on the day.
The series
wraps up on Sunday afternoon starting at 1 p.m.
