RADFORD, Va. - Presbyterian College softball took an
early lead on Radford but was trumped by a five-run fifth inning en route to a
6-3 loss to the Highlanders. The Blue
Hose ended the day for Radford's starting pitcher after just five batters but
was ultimately shut down at the plate in the late innings to fall to 13-16
overall and 1-11 in Big South play while Radford improves to 25-10 and 11-1 in
the league.
Tera Powell
opened the game with double in the gap in right center. She was moved to second base when Krysten
Handy was hit by a pitch. The bases were
loaded on a one-out throwing error by Radford's shortstop. A walk to Morgan Durham earned her an RBI to
bring Powell home and a wild pitch brought Krysten Handy home. Katie Anderson, who reached on the error, was
plated by Kayla Handy's single to put PC up 3-0. The hit, however, would be PC's last of the
game.
The
Highlanders also notched a leadoff double to right center to open the inning
and scored their first a batter later in the frame.
Brittany
Howell went into cruise control in the circle, retiring seven straight Radford
hitters and going three innings allowing just one run off four hits.
Mary Gordon
came on in the fourth and worked a quiet stanza before Radford erupted in the
fifth. A bases loaded walk brought one
run in and a grand slam on the next batter brought four more runs in inning to
give the Highlanders a 6-3 lead.
The senior
was credited with five runs, all earned to pick up the loss in the circle. She worked two and two-thirds, giving up
three hits. She falls to 6-5 on the
season with the loss.
