CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Presbyterian College softball snapped
a nine-game losing skid on Wednesday afternoon in Cullowhee by winning the
first game of the doubleheader, 9-0. In
the night-cap, PC fell 7-5 to the Catamounts.
Leslie Hensley tossed a two-hitter to lead the Blue Hose to victory.
Amanda
Miller hit her first home run of the season in the top of the first to give the
Blue Hose (14-17) an early lead. The solo
homer gave PC a 1-0 lead.
PC added
four in the fifth to go up by a 5-0 margin.
An inning later, the Blue Hose would tack on four more to take an insurmountable
9-0 lead. Rachel Parker's solo home run
played a big part in the sixth stanza which put PC in a position to run-rule
the Catamounts (6-33).
After
Hensley allowed a leadoff hit, the next 18 batters were kept hitless until a
single in the bottom of the sixth. The
Blue Hose hurler improved to 5-8 with the win and struck out five batters in
the six inning outing.
In the day's
second game, Western Carolina took early control with three runs in the first
inning before PC could answer in the third frame. After an inning opening walk to starting
pitcher Mary Gordon, Tera Powell's single put runners on first and third. Rachel Parker's double to left field brought
two runs in and cut the Catamount lead to just one run.
Two more
runs to open the fifth gave the Blue Hose a 4-3 lead. Powell's inning opening triple set the table
for Amanda Miller and Taylor Staten to each hit RBI doubles to give PC the lead
again.
Three runs
for Western in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the lead back to the hosts
at 6-4. In the top of the sixth, Powell's
RBI single brought Lindsay Trombley home for PC's fifth run.
Down by two
runs in the seventh, PC strung a single, walk and hit by pitch to load the
bases with two out. However, a ground
out to the pitcher ended the game.
Mary Gordon
worked the first five innings and allowed seven hits and six runs, four
earned. The was saddled with the loss to
fall to 6-6 on the year.
Presbyterian
College returns home on Thursday afternoon with a home doubleheader against
Furman. The matinee doubleheader starts
at 2 p.m.
