Softball Splits Against Western Carolina, Takes Opener 9-0

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Presbyterian College softball snapped a nine-game losing skid on Wednesday afternoon in Cullowhee by winning the first game of the doubleheader, 9-0.  In the night-cap, PC fell 7-5 to the Catamounts.  Leslie Hensley tossed a two-hitter to lead the Blue Hose to victory.

Amanda Miller hit her first home run of the season in the top of the first to give the Blue Hose (14-17) an early lead.  The solo homer gave PC a 1-0 lead.

PC added four in the fifth to go up by a 5-0 margin.  An inning later, the Blue Hose would tack on four more to take an insurmountable 9-0 lead.  Rachel Parker's solo home run played a big part in the sixth stanza which put PC in a position to run-rule the Catamounts (6-33).

After Hensley allowed a leadoff hit, the next 18 batters were kept hitless until a single in the bottom of the sixth.  The Blue Hose hurler improved to 5-8 with the win and struck out five batters in the six inning outing.

In the day's second game, Western Carolina took early control with three runs in the first inning before PC could answer in the third frame.  After an inning opening walk to starting pitcher Mary Gordon, Tera Powell's single put runners on first and third.  Rachel Parker's double to left field brought two runs in and cut the Catamount lead to just one run.

Two more runs to open the fifth gave the Blue Hose a 4-3 lead.  Powell's inning opening triple set the table for Amanda Miller and Taylor Staten to each hit RBI doubles to give PC the lead again.

Three runs for Western in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the lead back to the hosts at 6-4.  In the top of the sixth, Powell's RBI single brought Lindsay Trombley home for PC's fifth run.

Down by two runs in the seventh, PC strung a single, walk and hit by pitch to load the bases with two out.  However, a ground out to the pitcher ended the game.

Mary Gordon worked the first five innings and allowed seven hits and six runs, four earned.  The was saddled with the loss to fall to 6-6 on the year.

Presbyterian College returns home on Thursday afternoon with a home doubleheader against Furman.  The matinee doubleheader starts at 2 p.m.
