CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College softball dropped
a pair of games to Furman on Thursday afternoon by 2-0 and 2-1 margins. The day's second game went to extra innings and
was decided in part by the tiebreaker rule.
Brittany
Howell tossed a seven inning two-hitter to open the day for PC (14-19). She allowed two runs, one earned in the game
while striking out four. Howell took the
hard-luck loss to fall to 3-4.
Furman (17-17)
scored their runs in the fourth inning, but it was the Paladin's pitcher Lana
Mackey that shut down the PC batters. She
struck out 13 and allowed four hits on the day to improve to 12-7 on the season. Katie Anderson grabbed two of the Blue Hose
hits to go 2-for-3 on the game.
In the
second game, PC's offense stuttered early with just two base runners in the first
three innings. The fourth inning, on the
other hand, started off with consecutive singles to put Taylor Staten and
Rachel Parker at first and second bases.
A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a place and Morgan Durham brought
Staten home with a double to centerfield.
The run tied the game at 1-1 after Furman posted a run to open the game in
the first inning.
With the
teams level at one each after seven innings, the international tiebreaker rule
came into effect with a runner being placed at second base to open the eighth
inning for each team. A sacrifice bunt
moved the runner to second base and she came home on a dropped fly ball.
In the
bottom of the frame, Amanda Miller went to second base and was moved to third
by Taylor Staten. Miller, however, would
go no further as a line drive to second base and a grounder to the shortstop
ended the game.
Leslie
Hensley went the distance in the circle for PC, allowing two runs, one earned,
off five hits. She struck out eight
Paladins in the outing. She fell to 5-9
on the season while Furman's Bradley got the win to go to 1-5 and Mackey picked
up her second save of the season.
The Blue
Hose will face their sternest test of the season on Saturday afternoon against
the Tennessee Volunteers. PC travels to
Knoxville for a doubleheader series starting at 2 p.m.
