CLINTON, S.C. - After falling behind early, Presbyterian
College softball rallied throughout and ultimately fell, 14-9 to Charleston
Southern in the final of the weekend series.
The Blue Hose fall to 13-12 on the season and 1-7 in the Big South while
the Buccaneers improve to 20-19-1 and 4-4 in league play with series sweep. Katie Anderson had five RBI in the game,
bringing at least one run home in each of her four at bats.
The Bucs
sent 12 hitters to the plate and returned with nine runs off five hits. Charleston Southern's 9-0 advantage after the
first half inning put PC in a hole but not an insurmountable hole.
PC responded
with three runs in the bottom of the first inning with two outs. Taylor Staten doubled and scored off Katie
Anderson's single to left field.
Brittany Howell's single to left took Anderson over to third and Howell
went into scoring position on the throw.
Amanda Miller hit a ground ball to shortstop for what looked to be the
third out. Instead, an errant throw
allowed both Howell and Anderson to score as PC knifed the margin to 9-3.
Starting
pitcher Leslie Hensley settled down after a rocky first inning for three
consecutive open frames in the second, third and fourth innings. She helped her own cause to open the bottom
of the second with a home run over the left field fence. Her second bomb of the season made the score
9-4.
Anderson
notched her second and third RBI of the game with her first home run of the
season in the third inning. Her shot to
left center also brought Staten home and cut the lead to 9-6. A pair of errors
and a wild pitch brought Howell home for the second time in the game and cut
the margin to just two runs at 9-7.
In the
fourth inning, Anderson notched her fourth RBI with a two-out single down the
left field line. She plated Krysten
Handy and made the lead just one run.
However, in
the top of the fifth, CSU erupted for four runs to take a commanding 13-8
lead. The first three runs of the inning
ended the outing for Hensley. She exited
after four and a third innings and gave up 12 runs off eight hits while
striking out four batters. She was
relieved by Mary Gordon who tossed the final two and two-thirds allowing two
runs off five hits.
The Blue
Hose bats brought another run back in the bottom of the sixth with Anderson's
fifth RBI to bring Handy home for the second time in three innings. The run was both team's last scoring and set
the final score at 14-9.
Hensley took
the loss to fall to 4-7 on the season while CSU's Vetter earned the relief win,
working the final four innings and holding PC to two runs off three hits.
The Blue
Hose continue the string of 12 straight league games with a home meeting with
Gardner-Webb. The season series finale
between the Runnin' Bulldogs and Blue Hose gets underway from Clinton at 3:30
on Wednesday.
