SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Presbyterian College women's
soccer played strong for the entire ninety minutes of regulation, but it was a
97th minute Wofford goal that gave the hosting Terriers a 1-0 win
over PC. The Blue Hose fell to 0-2-1 on
the season while Wofford improved to 2-1-0 on the year.
The Blue Hose
earned their first goalscoring opportunity in the 16th minute when
Sara Simpson delivered a cutting pass towards the feet of Kate Baker. The pass was mistimed by a half step as the
ball went wide for a Wofford goal kick.
Two minutes later, the freshman Simpson ripped another shot which was
unfortunately deflected by Baker who slid into the path of the shot.
Sarah Beth
Anderson made four big saves in the first half, none bigger than when she
stopped Wofford's Emily Bougas in the 23rd minute. She made a total of five saves in the match.
In the 36th
minute, Lauren Snyder was denied by the woodwork as her shot beat the Wofford
goalkeeper but but the post. The play
was initiated by an incisive pass from Renee Ballew who earned miles of space
on the play with solid footwork.
The teams
entered the halftime break even at 0-0.
Wofford led the shots tally, 8-4, but it was PC who led in corners by a
4-3 margin.
The first
chance of the second period went to the Terriers in the 47th
minute. A corner kick was delivered into
the box and the head of a Wofford striker.
The shot on goal was defended by Anderson who calmly made the save.
In the 64th
minute, Jessica Kramer took her first shot of the night when she ripped an
effort which swerved just over the near-side upper corner.
With just 25
seconds left on the clock, Melanie Martin struck a pass towards Simpson that
would have given the freshman a one-on-one chance at goal. The pass, however, went just past the
attacker's boot and into the keeper's awaiting mits.
Regulation
finished with the teams level at 0-0 and the Terriers with a 9-8 advantage in
shots department.
With 3:55
remaining in the first overtime period, Wofford's Bougas got the ball with
space and took the shot which found a way past Anderson to give Wofford the
victory.
The Blue Hose
will return to action on Friday night to open a two-game homestand. PC plays North Florida at 7 p.m. on Friday
night and faces Furman on Sunday at 2 p.m.
