CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College owned
the run of play all night against Erskine but it was Kate Baker's 92nd
minute goal which vaulted the Blue Hose to a 1-0 win over the Flying Fleet on
Wednesday night at Martin Stadium.
PC improves to
2-6-1 overall while the Fleet fall to 1-5-0 on the year. The victory is PC's second overtime triumph
in four trips to extra time.
"I'm really
proud of our workrate tonight," said head coach Brian Purcell. "We had the clear upper hand tonight due to
the tremendous effort out of our team tonight.
We had a lot of unlucky bounces but the team stayed together and played
as a family to get the win.
The teams were
unable to score in the opening half despite a 15-1 advantage for the Blue Hose
in terms of shots.
With just 8:42
left, Baker was pulled down at the edge of the penalty box to earn PC a big
free kick. Stephanie Aaron took the try
from 18-yards out but the try sailed just over the crossbar.
The Blue Hose
tallied a pair of shots off the crossbar in the second half, but the match was
sent to overtime tied at 0-0.
Just 1:15 into
overtime, Jessica Kramer worked the ball down the flank and crossed the ball
from just inside the touch line. Her
cross went to the far post and to Baker's foot.
She gathered herself and shot the ball across the goal into the far-side
netting to end the match. The goal is
her second of the season and gives the striker the team lead in goals.
Sarah Beth
Anderson was forced to make saves on all three Erskine shots including two in
the second period. In total, PC finished
with 39 shots and 16 on goal. The Blue
Hose also earned 10 corners to Erskine's none.
The Blue Hose continue
a five-match homestand on Friday night against Francis Marion. The final non-conference game of the season
starts at 7 p.m.
