CLINTON, S.C. - Rebecca Miller's right
footed strike in the 79th minute gave the Presbyterian College Blue
Hose a stunning 1-0 win over Francis Marion on Friday night at Martin
Stadium. The freshman tallied her first collegiate
goal to give PC a two-match winning streak entering league play.
The Blue Hose
improve to 3-6-1 overall while Francis Marion falls to 2-9-1.
"It feels
great to get some success after the tough times we've had of late," said head
coach Brian Purcell. "The team worked
very hard and responded to the things that Coach Azem and myself have told them
in the last few days. I'm very happy
that the team is playing with confidence again."
The teams were
level at the halftime intermission with FMU taking an 8-4 advantage in
shots. PC had plenty of chances
including a pair of shots on goal in the opening 45-minutes.
In the 56th
minute, Francis Marion's Megan Ogiltree conjured up a shot from inside the box
which was stopped by the post.
The match was
won in the 79th minute as Rebecca Miler ripped a shot from just
inside the 18-yard box which found the back of the net. She was fed by Sara Simpson who is credited
with an assist, her first collegiate point.
The goal for Miller was her first collegiate tally.
The Blue Hose
defense clamped down in the final minute to secure the shutout victory. Sarah Beth Anderson earned her second
consecutive shutout and her third of the season. She made seven saves in the match.
PC was outshot
on the night by an 18-10 margin with a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. PC won the corner kicks battle with four to
the Patriots' three.
The Blue Hose open
conference play in one week against VMI at the friendly confines of Martin
Stadium. Kickoff against the Keydets is
scheduled for 7 p.m.
