CLINTON, S.C. - For the third consecutive
match, Presbyterian College women's soccer needed extra time to settle the
affair. The third time, however, was the
charm as PC's Tori Lopez struck a 109th minute game winner to shock
North Florida at Martin Stadium. The
freshman's first career goal gave PC its first win of the season as the Blue
Hose improve to 1-2-1 on the year and North Florida falls to 0-4-0 on the
season.
The ball was
dumped into the penalty area and knocked around before Stephanie Aaron settled
the ball and dished a quick pass over to Lopez.
She got the ball at the near edge of the six-yard box and shot across
the face of goal to beat the diving Osprey goalkeeper.
"I'm very
proud of our team tonight," said head coach Brian Purcell. "It feels great to go out there and get the
monkey off our back after three straight overtime matches. We're going to celebrate this one and start
preparing for Furman who comes to town on Sunday."
Sarah Beth
Anderson earned her first shutout of the season and second of her career
between the pipes. She stopped two shots
and saw 19 total in the match.
In the 17th
minute, Stephanie Allen had a look at goal from 19 yards, but her free kick
went high of the target by the narrowest of margins. North Florida had five shots in the first half
and a pair of corner kicks just before the intermission which failed to produce
a score and left the teams level at 0-0 going into the break.
The second
half saw eight shots from the visitors to PC's three. All of the Blue Hose shots, however ended on
fame while just one of the Osprey's tries were on goal.
In the 75th
minute, UNF's Alexa Rabon delivered a free kick shot which clanged the crossbar
and bounced away to the defense.
Immediately
after the attack, PC countered for an masterful attacking flurry which came to
a premature end when Morgan Fragapane was shown a yellow card. The booking was PC's first of the season.
The teams
traded attacks for the remainder of regulation as the match went into sudden
victory overtime play.
In the first
session, North Florida registered the only two shots and added four more in the
second period. PC, on the other hand,
needed just one shot to garner the victory.
North Florida
was flagged offsides seven times in the match, but it was one with just three
minutes left in the final overtime period which went uncalled which was the
costliest for the Ospreys. The ball was
passed to a wide attacker, but a central striker was in an offsides position
but out of the play. The linesman's flag
shot up but went back down as the ball was played wide. The Ospreys, seeing that the flag was up,
stopped on the play, allowing the PC defense to get in position and stop a
goalscoring opportunity.
PC's two match
homestand continues on Sunday afternoon as I-385 rival Furman comes to the
friendly confines. The non-conference
match starts at 2 p.m. from Martin Stadium.
The match will be broadcast live on the Big South Network. For more information, please visit www.BigSouthSports.com.
