CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College men's
soccer threatened the goal all afternoon but an 87th minute goal
gave Winthrop the 1-0 win on Thursday afternoon. The Blue Hose had no fewer than three
breakaway chances in the match as PC drops its Big South Conference opener to
the Eagles.
PC falls to
1-5-1 on the season and 0-1 in the Big South while Winthrop improves to 3-5-1
and 1-1 in the league. The late goal
also spoiled PC's hopes of earning the program's first win over Winthrop.
"The team
played very hard tonight, but we are very disappointed not to earn a victory,"
said head coach Bret Boulware. "When you
make that many quality chances and have that many breakaway opportunities, you
should get the win."
In the 24th
minute, PC threatened to take the lead when Davis Orders took a shot which was
saved. Winthrop's goalkeeper was unable
to hold onto the save and Stephen Glover was on the spot for the shot. The junior dove and struck the ball at full
stretch but the only thing to deny his team-high third goal of the season was
the bottom of the post.
The team went
into the halftime intermission tied at 0-0.
Winthrop held a 11-7 advantage in shots but only a 5-4 lead in shots on
goal.
Just out of
the break, Orders got free on a breakaway in the defensive third. He arrived at the edge of the 18-yard box
with the Winthrop keeper out of his goal.
Orders chipped the ball towards goal.
The shot, however was weighted too firm and landed barely inside the
front netting for a goal kick.
Orders was at
the center of another great look with 13 minutes to play when his shot from
15-yards was saved by the keeper. The
resulting rebound sailed over the bar for a Blue Hose corner kick. The set piece came into the box where Thomas
Palma's diving header went just high.
With less than
three minutes left on the clock, Winthrop went forward for what would be the
deciding attack of the match. Nick
Kowalski flicked the ball over a Blue Hose defender to give Matt Stinson a
one-on-one chance on goal. The
midfielder struck the ball and recorded his second goal of the season to secure
the Eagle victory.
The Blue Hose
logged just one shot in the final 2:30 , a try by Harrison Russell.
Andrew
Wallingford had a strong night between the pipes, making 10 saves on the
afternoon while seeing 24 total shots.
The Blue Hose
trailed in shots by a 24-17 margin with Orders taking four attempts and Nico
Fazio recording three tries. Winthrop
had six corners to PC's two. Shots on
goal were 11-8 in favor of the Eagles.
PC is in
action next on Saturday night on the road against Radford starting at 6
p.m. Winthrop hosts Wofford on Saturday
night.
