SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Presbyterian College went
behind for the first time in 2010 but rallied with Stephen Glover's 79th
minute goal to earn a hard-fought 1-1 draw against I-26 rival USC Upstate. The win keeps PC at 1-0-1 while the Spartans
go to 0-1-2 on the season.
The Spartans
got off the mark in the 30th minute when Hakeem King buried a shot
from the left side of the box on a set piece play. Timo Foerster played the low free kick into
the box from the edge of the 18-yard box near the right-side touch line.
PC could not
find the equalizer in the first half and went into the break trailing for the
first time in 2010.
With just ten
minutes remaining in the match, goalkeeper William Redmond made a spectacular
play to dispossess a Spartan attacker outside the penalty box. He came up and passed forward to Paul Gunning
at the by-line in step. He took the ball
into the offensive third at pace and crossed the ball to the awaiting head of Glover. The redshirt junior headed the ball into the
net for his first career goal. Most
importantly, the goal equalized the teams at 1-1.
There was
nothing between the teams for the remaining minutes of regulation which forced
PC to go to overtime for the second consecutive match.
A flurry of
late shots would not produce the game-winning goal as PC took three shots in
extra time to Upstate's four chances.
Redmond had a
career night with a career-high ten saves in the draw.
PC outshot
Upstate by a 23-19 margin and held a 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
PC travels
this weekend to play in the Smith Barney Nike Classic in Burlington, Vt. The Blue Hose face Vermont on Friday
afternoon before closing the weekend against New Hampshire on Sunday morning.
