CLINTON, S.C. - Junior Alice Blackwell (Marietta, S.C.) scored her first career goal with 6:17 remaining in regulation to lift the Presbyterian College women's soccer team to a 2-1 Homecoming victory over Coastal Carolina on Saturday morning.
PC picks up its first league win of 2011 to improve to 1-3-2 in the Big South Conference and 3-10-2 overall. Coastal Carolina falls to 2-12-1 on the year and 2-4-0 in the conference.
Blackwell broke a 1-1 tie as time wound down by converting from a set piece. Stephanie Allen (Augusta, Ga.) lifted a free kick into the goal box and Kelly Kozera (Rome, Ga.) knocked the ball to Blackwell. Blackwell finished the chance from in close to give PC its first lead of the day and the only one it would need.
The goal completed a comeback that began when Sara Simpson (Columbia, S.C.) also finished a free kick opportunity in 66th minute. Emily Boggus (Conyers, Ga.) fired a shot that bounced off of a Chanticleer and back to Simpson, who cashed in for her second of the year. The goal pulled PC even, 1-1
PC goalkeeper Sarah Beth Anderson (Grayson, Ga.) made five saves in the win and earned her third victory of the year. The senior made four saves in the second half to keep the Chanticleers off of the scoreboard in the final frame.
Coastal Carolina scored the match's first goal in the 26th minute, also off of a free kick. Ashley Day finished off an Alyssa Clark that bounced over the head of Anderson to put the Chanticleers ahead, 1-0.
PC tallied five shots on goal to Coastal Carolina's six, each by a different member of the Blue Hose. Brittany Whitson (Conyers, Ga.) and Simpson led the team with two shots each. Allen, Whitson and Morgan Fragapane (Baltimore, Md.) each picked up a shot on goal, joining the goal scorers.
The Blue Hose begin their final road trip of the year on Thursday with an away game at Winthrop. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
