The Presbyterian College football team travels to Statesboro, Ga., this Saturday, Oct. 22, to take on the #1-Ranked Georgia Southern Eagles. Kick-off is slated for 2 p.m., and will be broadcast on WLBG 860- AM. Fans can also log into www.GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com and watch on-line for a nominal fee.
The Eagles are ranked #1 in both the FCS Coaches and Sports Network/Fathead.com Top 25 polls. GSU will be the highest-ranked opponent the Blue Hose have ever played in Division I history. It will also be the second ranked opponent for PC this season. Wofford was ranked in the top 10 in both polls the beginning of the season. PC's last win over a ranked opponent was against #17 Liberty in 2008 when the Blue Hose defeated the Flames 31-28 at Bailey Memorial Stadium.
The Eagles and Blue Hose have only met twice, both were losses for PC, a 35-21 defeat in 1983 and a 41-6 loss in 1984.
This will be the first time Head Coach Nichols has been to Paulson Stadium since his four-year stint as assistant coach with the Eagles. From 1992-95 Nichols served not only as an assistant coach but as the recruiting coordinator, helping the team to the 1993 Southern Conference Championship and NCAA Play-off berths in 93 and 95.
The Eagles are a perfect 6-0 overall and are coming off a 50-20 win over Furman last Saturday. Leading GSU on the ground is Robert Brown, who is averaging 101.8 yards per game and 7.5 yards a carry. He has four touchdowns on the year and has netted 611 yards. Jaybo Shaw runs the offense for the Eagles as QB and is 31-for-56 with no interceptions. He has five touchdowns and averages 105.2 yards per game. Defensively, The Eagles are led by Darius Eubanks with 22 solo and 12 assisted tackles, one of which was for a loss.
The Blue Hose picked up their first win in four tries with a 28-14 victory over Gardner Webb last Saturday. PC rushed a season-high 52 times against the Runnin' Bulldogs. The win Saturday guaranteed PC a multiple win season for the second year in a row, the first in its Division I history. The Blue Hose defeated Gardner Webb for the second time in as many seasons, marking the first time since the 1995 and 1996 season, PC has taken the win over the Runnin' Bulldogs twice in a row. The win also gave the Blue Hose its most wins at Bailey Memorial Stadium since going 4-2 in 2008 ...
Lance Byrd leads the rushing attack for the Blue Hose with five touchdowns and 407 net yards. He averages 67.8 yards per game and 4.3 yards per carry. Michael Ruff paces the team in receptions with 23 catches for 202 yards. Ryan Singer got the nod against GWU and is 54-for-111 with five interceptions and three touchdowns. He is averaging 108.7 yards per game. Justin Bethel paces defensively with 55 total tackles (34-21), one sack, five pass breakups and three interceptions, as well as three blocked kicks.
The game at GSU is the first of three away from Bailey Memorial Stadium as PC also travels to Liberty Oct. 29 and then to Coastal Carolina Nov. 5 before returning home for the final two games (VMI on Nov. 12 and Charleston Southern on Nov. 19).
