Matt Brevi caught two touchdown passes, while three others added a score each to lead the Stony Brook Seawolves to the 42-24 win over the Presbyterian College football team this evening at LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook, N.Y.
PC drops its third straight to go to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the Big South. Stony Brook wins its second straight and improves to 2-3 and 1-0 in the league.
Stony Brook drew first blood, driving the field in its first possession and capping it with an 18-yard run by Kyle Essington. The kick by Wesley Skiffington was good and the Seawolves led, 7-0, with 8:55 on the clock.
Presbyterian College responded with its first points of the night, taking the ball 44 yards, highlighted by 16 and 19 yard rushes by Lance Byrd, to set up a 33-yard field goal by Aaron Mayes.
The Seawolves answered with a three-play, 55-yard drive that ended with a touchdown. Brevi caught Essington's pass and took it 44 yards for the score to give Stony Brook the 14-3 lead with 4:00 left in the first quarter.
Late in the second quarter PC downed a punt at the Stony Brook three-yard line and after the Seawolves went three and out, the Blue Hose got the ball at their own 46-yard line. On the first play, Michael Ruff ran the ball 54 yards, his longest of the season, for his first touchdown of the season and second of his career. After Mayes' extra point was good, PC trailed by just four with 3:56 on the clock in the second.
After PC didn't convert on a fourth and one, the Seawolves took over at their own 45-yard line with just under a minute to go in the half and it looked as though the half would run out on them. Two PC penalties extended the half and Essington threw a 40-yard hail mary pass that was caught by Brevi for his second TD of the game. SBU went into the locker room up 21-10.
Ruff started the second half for PC with a 31-yard run, giving the Blue Hose the ball at the Stony Brook 42. The first play of the drive Seth Moreland ran 22 yards, and after three short yardage plays, Brandon Miley hit Ruff for a nine-yard TD to give him his second score of the game and put the Blue Hose only down by four again, 21-17, with 12:35 to go in the third quarter.
Stony Brook answered quickly when the Seawolves returned a punt 44 yards, giving them the ball at the PC 22. The Essington 22-yard pass to Miguel Maysonet was successful and after the PAT, the Seawolves led 28-17 with 8:57 to go in the third.
The Seawolves tacked on 14 more points the next seven minutes, the first TD coming off a 10-play, 80-yard drive, highlighted by a 14-yard reception by Brevi. The next score was set up by a PC interception at the PC 42-yard line. After an incomplete pass in the first play for the Seawolves, Essington hit Kevin Norrell for a 42-yard TD catch, and after the PAT Stony Brook led 42-17.
The next possession PC made it a 42-14 game with a seven play, 80-yard drive, highlighted by a 23-yard rush by Moreland and a 34-yard catch by Ruff. Jeremiah McKie caught a Ryan Singer pass and ran it 23 yards for the score.
The Blue Hose got the ball back after a SBU fourth and one failed and began their drive on their 38-yard line. PC made it to the one yard line before being backed up to the seven. On fourth down, Singer was sacked to end the threat, however.
Neither team would score the remainder of the quarter as the game ended with SBU up 42-24.
Ruff led the Blue Hose with two touchdowns. Moreland rushed for over 100 yards, his first of his career, posting a 102 on the night. Miley was nine for 23 with one touchdown and one interception.
The Blue Hose return home to take on Gardner Webb Saturday, Oct. 15. It is Homecoming for PC with kick-off slated for 2:00 p.m.
