CLINTON, S.C. - Byron Quinatoa (Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador) scored his second goal of the day with 1:50 left in the first overtime period to give the Presbyterian College men's soccer team a 3-2 win over Campbell on Saturday at Edens Field at Martin Stadium.
PC moves to 2-9-0 on the year and 2-1-0 in Big South Conference play. Campbell falls to 5-6-1 overall and 1-2-0 in league action.
The first-ever meeting between the two sides saw four goals in the second half, with PC scoring the first two. A Campbell goal in the final two minutes of regulation completed a Camel comeback and sent the match into overtime.
With the first overtime period winding down, Ignacio Monchetti (Montevideo, Uruguay) brought the ball upfield and found Quinatoa waiting outside the goal box. Quinatoa received the pass and blasted home a shot to beat Campbell goalkeeper Ryan Amons, giving PC its second Big South Conference win of the year.
Freshman goalkeeper Ethan Watson (Taylorsville, Ga.) made a career-high 10 saves to secure his first collegiate win. Watson racked up seven stops in the second half for the Blue Hose.
The Monchetti-Quinatoa connection also produced the afternoon's first score. Four minutes into the second half, Monchetti flicked a ball to a streaking Quinatoa and the junior forward did the rest, taking the ball to the net and scoring from the left side. The goal gave PC a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Hose struck again in the 72nd minute, this time with Monchetti with a score. The freshman tallied a goal and two assists on the day for four points. Monchetti won the ball off of a clearance and took off deeper into the Campbell end before finding the net. The goal marked Monchetti's second of the year.
Campbell staged a comeback thanks to two goals from Travis Golden. The Camel headed in a Mitchell Cardenas corner kick in the 78th minute to cut the PC lead in half before finishing off a tic-tac-toe play with 1:18 left in regulation.
Jhuvon Francis played a pass to Jonathan Ray, who tapped a pass to Golden in front of the net. Golden converted the chance from in close and pulled Campbell even, 2-2.
The teams then headed to overtime, setting up Quinatoa's game-winner.
PC came out as the aggressor early in the match, as Josh Carter (Anchorage, Alaska) and Bobby Keskey (Louisville, Ky.) each fired a shot on goal within the first 13 minutes and held Campbell shotless until the 20th minute.
The Blue Hose put four shots on goal to Campbell's three in the first half, but neither side could beat the other's goalkeeper and the teams entered the halftime break in a 0-0 tie.
PC returns to action on Friday evening with a road match against Liberty. Kickoff in Lynchburg, Va., is slated for 6 p.m.
