CLINTON, S.C. – Quarterback Ryan Singer (Dunedin, Fla.)
threw for two touchdowns and ran for a pair of scores to help the Presbyterian
College football team knock off visiting VMI on Saturday afternoon, 38-6.
PC improves to 3-7 on the year and 2-3 in Big South
Conference action, marking the most conference wins in a season since first playing a Big South schedule in 2008. VMI falls to 1-9 overall and 1-4 in league play.
PC returns to Bailey Memorial Stadium for its season finale
on Saturday, November 12, with a 1 p.m. Senior Day kickoff against Charleston Southern.
The contest saw a Big South Conference record fall as PC
defensive back Justin Bethel (Blythewood, S.C.) made two solo tackles to break
the all-time conference record in that category, with 196. Charleston Southern
linebacker Jada Ross set the previous record of 195 from 2004-07.
PC churned out a season-high 491 yards on offense and enjoyed a 36:47 time of possession to VMI's 23:13, including letting the Keydets hold the ball for only 3:36 in the first quarter.
Lance Byrd (Jacksonville, Fla.) led PC on the ground with a
game-high 117 yards on the ground and Singer followed with 106 rushing yards,
just two shy of a career high. Byrd also posted a rushing touchdown on the day.
The two have rushed for over 100 yards in a game for the second time in three
games after the pair each broke the century mark against Liberty on October 29.
Singer went 18-for-29 passing for 182 yards, finding
Anderico Bailey (Covington, Ga.) and Arthur Williams (Baxley, Ga.) for one
touchdown apiece. Six different PC receivers caught at least two passes and
Bailey led the squad with seven receptions.
Defensively, Cedric Byrd (Tyrone, Ga.) led the Blue Hose with
six solo tackles, an assist and three pass breakups. Linebacker CeeJay Harris
(Long Beach, Calif.) also recovered two fumbles and Fred Marshall (Ocilla, Ga.)
grabbed an interception. Derren Evans (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Josh Polk
(Lithonia, Ga.) each notched a sack.
VMI running back T.J. Talley ran seven times for 60 yards
and a touchdown. Quarterback Eric Kordenbrock went 8-for-21 for 90 yards.
PC wasted little time finding the scoreboard, marching for 63
yards on 11 plays on the game's first offensive series. Singer helped the Blue
Hose down the field through the air and on the ground, scrambling three times
before breaking off a 21-yard run into the end zone on third-and-12.
VMI traveled deep into the PC end on the ensuing possession,
but Nick Newton (Clearwater, Fla.) jarred the ball loose from Keydet running back T.J. Talley
and Cedric Byrd recovered on the PC five to end the VMI drive.
The Blue Hose offense struck once more in the first quarter.
A marathon 83-yard drive ended with a four-yard Lance Byrd rush into the end zone to
put the home side up, 14-0. A 29-yard completion to Ruff and a 22-yard run by
Singer highlighted the drive, as well as five Byrd rushes.
The teams searched for a score for much of the second
quarter and both teams hit paydirt with less than four minutes left. A 44-yard
punt return put VMI on the PC 16, and T.J. Talley gave the Keydets their first
points of the day on a seven-yard run with 3:17 left in the first half. VMI
could not convert on the extra point, however, and PC led by 14-6 margin.
The score spurred the PC offense to action as the Blue Hose
moved down the field on the next possession. Ruff provided a big play by escaping
from tacklers on screen for 23 yards and Byrd hauled in a 20-yard pass to set
up a 14-yard Arthur Williams touchdown pass from Singer to put PC up, 21-6.
The Blue Hose took the ball right back as CeeJay Harris
recovered a Keydet fumble to give PC the ball with 1:32 to go before halftime.
PC took advantage of the new possession and cashed in on a 35-yard Aaron Mayes
(Blythewood, S.C.) field goal to take a 24-6 lead into the locker room at the
halftime break.
PC kept the points coming by scoring twice in the third
quarter. Singer capped a five-play, 50-yard drive with a 19-yard rushing
touchdown on an option keeper. Arthur Williams made a key block to give the quarterback
room to squeeze past the Keydet defense into the end zone and extend PC's lead
to 31-6.
Each team turned in two stalled drives before Marshall
reclaimed the Ball for PC on an interception with 4:35 left in the third
quarter.
The Blue Hose used the turnover to score its final touchdown
late in the third quarter, as Singer found Bailey for a 10-yard touchdown pass
to put an exclamation point on a seven-play, 63-yard drive. PC then led, 38-6.
PC chewed up the clock in the final quarter with a time of
possession of 9:22 and allowed only two unsuccessful VMI drives to hold on to
the win, 38-6.
