The Presbyterian College softball team scored two runs in the first and added an insurance run in the sixth to take the 3-0 win over the Western Carolina Catamounts in the opening game of the North Carolina A&T Invitational being held Feb. 25-27 in Greensboro, N.C. The game was originally scheduled for 9 a.m. but was delayed until to 12:30 p.m. because of inclement weather.
Tera Powell (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) led off the first inning for the Blue Hose (5-0) with a single to center field and stole second and third. She scored the game-winner off a Morgan Durham (Simpsonville, S.C.) sacrifice bunt. Taylor Staten (Belvedere, S.C.), who got on base off a walk, stole third and scored when the Catamount (7-4) second baseman mishandled the ball and PC took the early 2-0 lead.
PC added and insurance run in the sixth when Leslie Hensley (Cheraw, S.C.) singled to short and drove in Codee Yeske (Lexington, S.C.), who was on base due to an error by the third baseman.
Western Carolina scattered three runs as Hensley threw a complete game with five strikeouts for her third win of the season.
Due to the weather, the tournament schedule was adjusted and at 9 a.m. Saturday the Blue Hose will take on Rider and then turn around at 3 p.m. to face the Aggies. Sunday, the Blue Hose will play IPFW at 1 p.m. before the championship game at 3 p.m.
