PC Opens Big South Play with Sweep of Winthrop

Jennifer Marshall (Spring Hill, Fla.) hit a two-RBI double to left field that broke open a 2-2 tie, leading the Blue Hose to the 4-2 win over Winthrop in the second game of a softball doubleheader this afternoon at the PC Softball Complex in Clinton, S.C.  Marshall also added a RBI in the 3-1 victory over the Eagles in the first game.

Winthrop (6-14, 0-2 BSC) scored in the top of the fourth for the game's first run after Lauren Levin brought home Chelsey Schoenfeldt with a sacrifice fly.  The lead was short-lived as the Blue Hose (11-2-1, 2-0 BSC) posted a run in the bottom of the inning.  Amanda Miller (Orlando, Fla.) singled in Codee Yeske (Lexington, S.C.), who reached on a single to short.

PC scored two more in the bottom of the sixth to break the tie and take the 3-1 win.  Morgan Durham (Simpsonville, S.C.) doubled to center field and advanced to third on a wild pitch to set up Krysten Handy (Gainesville, Fla.), who hit a sacrifice bunt that plated Durham for the game-winner.  Marshall added an insurance run with a double to score Kaitlyn Sambito (Jacksonville, Fla.), who reached on a walk.

In Game two, Winthrop scored a run in the second and third innings to lead 2-0 heading into the fourth inning.   Yeske advanced on a single and came home after Durham hit a two-run home run over the left field wall, her second of the year and PC tied the game at two.  Yeske and Durham played a part in the sixth inning as well, both coming home for the game-winning runs after Marshall doubled to left field.

Winthrop threatened in the seventh but Jenna Harbin lined to third-baseman Taylor Staten (Belvedere, who quickly threw to first before Teja Durante could make it back, ending the game.

Yeske paced the team, going three-for-six.  Marshall went two-for-five with three RBI in the series.  Leslie Hensley (Cheraw, S.C.) threw a complete game in the first, giving up just one run with four strikeouts and six hits, for the win (6-1).  She came in the seventh inning of the second game and picked up her first save of the season.

Brittany Howell (Orlando, Fla.) struck out 11 in 6.0 innings, giving up two runs off eight hits in the second game for her fifth win (5-1)

PC is back in action Thursday, March 17, with a match-up against East Tennessee State at the PC Softball Complex.  First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on www.GoBlueHose.com with John Avery calling all the action.
