PC Women's Tennis Drops Season Finale to Coastal Carolina

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team offered a hard-fought contest in its 2011 season finale, falling to Coastal Carolina at the Templeton Tennis Courts on a blustery Tuesday afternoon, 6-1.

“The girls fought hard, but ultimately Coastal Carolina handled the conditions a little better and were the stronger team,” said Head Coach and Director of Tennis Operations Patric Hynes. “Courtney Gardiner played a really disciplined match and finished her season off well.”

PC ends the season with a 9-12 overall record, a program-best in the Division I era, and a 1-6 record in the Big South.

Coastal moves its record to 18-5 overall and 5-1 in Big South play.

Courtney Gardiner (Powder Springs, Ga.) handed the Blue Hose their win on the day, coming in singles action. The freshman dispatched Kourtney Kowal in the third flight for her ninth singles win of the year, 6-3, 6-0.

PC battled strong winds and a strong Chanticleer lineup and could not secure another win, but the team saw several personal-best seasons end.

Paige Oelke (Athens,Ga.) ends the year with a team-leading 14-7 singles record, improving on an 8-13 campaign in 2010.

Freshman Christina Limantoro (Surabaya, Indonesia) finished the season going 11-11 in singles play, a record that included going 6-6 in the first flight and 5-5 in the second.

Fellow freshman Patricia Alves (Campinas, Brazil) also broke the 10-win barrier. Alves went 10-12 from the fourth and fifth flights and, like Limantoro, earned Big South Conference Crons Brand Freshman of the Week honors in 2011.

Three more members of the Blue Hose compiled at least eight singles wins, improving over a 2010 season that saw only Oelke win eight. Gardiner's win on Tuesday gave her a 9-12 record for the year. Cara Caruso (Roswell, Ga.) posted an 8-14 record and Lindsay Krause (Roswell, Ga.) also joined the eight-win club with an 8-11 singles record.

In doubles play, the first-flight tandem of Oelke and Limantoro went 12-10 to lead the squad.
