CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men's soccer team
headed into halftime of its Saturday night matchup against Erskine tied 1-1, but
two second half goals from the Flying Fleet handed PC a 3-1 loss.
PC moves to 0-4-0 on the season and Erskine improves to
2-1-1.
Luke Ade (Alpharetta, Ga.) scored his first goal of the
season in the match's 20th minute to even the contest at 1-1.
Ignacio Monchetti (Montevideo, Uruguay) crossed a ball in from the left side
into Ade, who converted from in front of the net to put PC on the board.
Monchetti's assist marks the first point of the freshman's career.
Byron Quinatoa (Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador) led
the team with six shots overall and two on goal. Monchetti added five and put
three on goal.
PC held a commanding advantage in corner kicks, seven to
two.
Goalkeeper Tanner Osborne (Lexington, S.C.) made eight saves
in the first half—including several in quick succession on two occasions—before
Ethan Watson (Taylorsville, Ga.) relieved him at the halftime break. Watson
made three saves in the second and took the loss.
Erskine struck first in the 17th minute to take a
1-0 lead. Cade Weatherly found his corner kick headed back to him, and the
member of the Flying Fleet lofted a successful cross to Dylan Goodale to put
Erskine ahead.
Ade responded a little over four minutes later to pull PC
even, 1-1.
Erskine received a penalty kick in the 27th
minute but Luke Boyce pulled the shot high and the teams entered halftime in a
1-1 tie.
Newt Turk (Cornelia, Ga.) made two defensive plays early in
the match to keep the contest scoreless, stopping two breakaways with sliding
tackles to knock the ball away from the Erskine attack and out of harm's way.
Erskine re-took the lead shortly after returning to the
field for the second half. Peter Savarese connected on a cross to Andrew
Settlemire in the goal box, who headed in the eventual game-winner in the 54th
minute.
Monchetti nearly scored an equalizer immediately after the
Erskine goal, getting a rebound from the scrambling Erskine goalkeeper and firing
on net. The shot found a leaping defender in front of the empty net, however,
and the score stayed 2-1 in favor of Erskine.
The Flying Fleet added its third and final goal via penalty
kick in the 82nd minute.
PC hits the road for a four-match stretch that begins on Wednesday
at Georgia Southern. Kickoff in Statesboro, Ga., is slated for 4 p.m.
