CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team
dropped a match to Mercer Bears on Friday night at Martin Stadium,
falling by a 4-0 margin.
PC moves to 0-7-0 on the year. Mercer improves to 5-2-0.
Kelly Kozera (Rome, Ga.) led the Blue Hose with three shots
on goal. Emily Boggus (Conyers, Ga.) and Sara Simpson (Columbia, S.C.) each
added one as well.
Goalkeeper Sarah Beth Anderson (Grayson, Ga.) made three
saves on the night, moving her within two of tying Emily Campbell's all-time
mark of 214. Campbell set the program record from 1993 through 1996.
Jordan Broadway (Chapin, S.C.) entered the game to relieve Anderson in goal with 11:40
remaining and made two stops.
The two sides played a fairly even first half. PC put three
shots on goal in opening frame, tying Mercer in that category.
Boggus registered PC's first attempt on net in the 29th
minute, sending a hard low shot at Mercer goalkeeper Cagney Valloch.
Jessica Kramer (Acworth, Ga.) kept the Mercer attack at bay
through the first half, locking down the Bears on the left side of the field.
A wild sequence showcasing timely defense kept the game
scoreless in the 32nd minute. A Mercer deflection rattled off the
post before a PC defender on the goal line blocked a shot on the rebound and
the third Bears shot veered safely over the crossbar. Anderson collected her
first save of the game a moment later on a shot from Emerald Phillips.
Mercer struck for the only time in the half in the 36th
minute by taking advantage of a free kick. Phillips lofted a long kick to
Olivia Tucker, who angled the cross past Anderson to give the Bears a 1-0
advantage.
Kozera looked for the tying goal with two chances on Valloch
in the final five minutes of the half but Mercer held the 1-0 advantage going
into the break.
The Bears found its second goal in quick fashion, scoring
1:44 into the second half. Casey Barrett streaked down the left side of the
goal box and tucked a shot into the right side of the net to put Mercer ahead,
2-0.
Olivia Tucker added her second of the game a little less
than five minutes later, scoring from the same side of the field in the
52nd minute to extend the Bears' lead to 3-0.
Simpson headed an attempt on net after the goal in the hopes
of cutting into the deficit but Valloch made the save.
Mercer scored its final goal in the 70th minute.
Anderson pushed out a curling corner kick from Emerald Phillips, but the ball
found a waiting Danielle Hesse who converted from in close to make the score
4-0 in favor of the visitors.
One of PC's best chances of the night came in the 85th
minute, when Kozera got free in front of the net but couldn't put enough on the
shot to grab a goal.
The Blue Hose return to action on Sunday afternoon when they
host USC Upstate. Kickoff at Edens Field at Martin Stadium is slated for 2 p.m.
