CLINTON, S.C. – Goals from Sara Simpson (Columbia, S.C.) and
Kelly Kozera (Rome, Ga.) paired with a shutout defensive performance helped the Presbyterian
College women's soccer team grab its first win of the season in a 2-0 victory over
USC Upstate on Sunday.
PC improves to 1-7-0 on the year. USC Upstate falls to 1-7-1.
Goalkeeper Sarah Beth Anderson (Grayson, Ga.) made two saves
in her first win and clean sheet of the year. The two saves tie her with Emily Campbell for the
PC career saves record at 214 saves.
Simpson and Kozera led the Blue Hose with five shots each.
Seven different PC players registered one shot on goal.
Stephanie Allen (Augusta, Ga.) and Gracie Boswell
(Simpsonville, S.C.) each collected an assist.
PC outshot USC Upstate, 22 to nine, and enjoyed a
nine-to-two corner kick advantage—including one that gave the Blue Hose their
second goal.
The Blue Hose struck first thanks to Simpson's score in the 33rd
minute. Boswell broke through the USC Upstate back line and forced goalkeeper
Sarah Plantz to come out and challenge a quick shot. The rebound came out to
Simpson, who took advantage of the absent keeper to chip in the go-ahead goal.
One of PC's best chances of the half came in the 19th minute off of the
foot of Christy Schofer (Powder Springs, Ga). The freshman received a pass at
the top of the goal box and lifted a shot that sailed inches over the crossbar.
The Blue Hose created another chance in the 28th
minute when a Kozera header bounced to Simpson, who pulled her shot high over
the bar.
Simpson's goal gave PC a 1-0 as the teams broke for
halftime.
PC would have to wait until the 58th minute to
extend its lead, but Kozera nearly converted seven minutes into the period when
a header from in close grazed the top of the crossbar.
In the 58th minute, Allen forced Plantz to leap and punch a free kick shot out
of the goal, setting up a corner kick and keeping the ball deep in the USC
Upstate end. Another corner kick later in the minute turned
into a successful chance for PC, as Allen's kick found the head of Kozera for
the freshman's first collegiate goal. PC led after the score, 2-0.
The Blue Hose continued to attack later in the half. Morgan Fragapane (Baltimore,
Md.) had a breakaway shot saved and Catie Smith (Greenville, S.C.) sent a
chance wide.
Anderson made her final save in the 78th minute and
the back line kept the Spartan offense silent to seal the 2-0 victory.
PC hits the road on Tuesday to face The Citadel in
Charleston, S.C., at 4 p.m.
