GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men's soccer
team used Byron Quinatoa's (Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador) first goal
of the year to tie up its match with No. 25 Furman in the second half on Friday, but the
Paladins scored twice to pull away for a 3-1 win.
PC falls to 0-7-0 on the year. Furman improves to 7-1-1.
Quinatoa led the team in shots (five) and shots on goal
(three). Ignacio Monchetti (Montevideo, Uruguay) also tallied a shot on goal.
Ethan Watson (Taylorsville, Ga.) made eight saves for the Blue
Hose in goal.
The Blue Hose attacked the Paladins early. Monchetti tallied
the game's first shot on goal by testing Furman goalkeeper Alec Kann in the
fourth minute and Newt Turk (Cornelia, Ga.) pushed another shot wide less than
a minute later.
Furman struck first, however, as Michael Gandier sent in a
cross from the right that found Coleton Henning to put the Paladins ahead 1-0
in the 13th minute.
Watson kept the deficit at one goal with two quick saves
against Martin Ontiveros in the 21st minute and made another shortly
before the half.
Quinatoa recorded PC's final shot on goal of the period but
the ball stayed out and the teams went into the halftime break with Furman
leading, 1-0.
Quinatoa picked up in the second where he left off in the
first, firing a shot on Kann seven seconds into the stanza.
Trailing 1-0 with less than 24 minutes remaining, the Blue
Hose clawed back and took advantage of a set piece to pull even with the
Paladins.
A Furman foul and yellow card set PC up for a free kick.
Jonny Mercado (Lilburn, Ga.) took the kick and lifted a ball to Quinatoa, who
headed it into the right corner of the goal for his first goal of the season.
The game stood tied, 1-1.
Mercado's assist marked his first of the year.
Furman took the lead back two minutes later, however, as
Michael Gandier headed in a pass from Nicky MacKain to give the Paladins a 2-1
advantage.
Watson made two more saves as he aimed to keep the Blue Hose within striking distance but Furman added a final goal in the 83rd minute to seal the win, 3-1.
The Blue Hose head to Duke on Tuesday for their next game and final non-conference game of the season.
Kickoff from Durham, N.C., is slated for 7 p.m.
