Women's Soccer Begins Homestand Against Winthrop, Gardner-Webb


CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College women's soccer team (2-13-0, 2-6-0 Big South) begins a three-match homestand that ends the regular season on Thursday night against Winthrop (7-6-2, 4-2-2) before Gardner-Webb (3-11-1, 2-5-1) comes to town on Saturday night. PC will honors its seniors Alice Blackwell, Abi Thompson, Sarah Kustick and Townley Cheek on Saturday night.

Both games will be streamed on the Big South Network presented by State Farm.

Winthrop sports a 7-6-2 overall record and a 4-2-2 Big South record. The Eagles tied Radford on Saturday night, 1-1 after handling VMI on Thursday night, 6-1. The win snapped a two-match losing streak to Longwood and Liberty the week before. Krystyna Freda ranks second in the Big South Conferenece in points (22) and goals (10) and earned league Attacking Player of the Week honors this week.

Gardner-Webb brings a 3-11-1 record and a 2-5-1 Big South marker on the year. The Runnin' Bulldogs head to UNC Asheville on Thursday before visiting Clinton on Saturday. Gardner-Webb took a 2-0 home win from VMI on Sunday afternoon after dropping a narrow loss to Radford on Thursday, 1-0. Shelby Hooe leads the team with three goals while Samantha Gutierrez has two goals and two assists on the season.
 
The Blue Hose trail Winthrop in the all-time series and look for their first win against the Eagles with an 0-4-1 record. PC enters the week with a 14-4-0 record over Gardner-Webb. PC scored its first-ever goal against Winthrop last season on a Sara Simpson score in a 2-1 loss. The Runnin' Bulldogs have taken the last three matches after PC won 14 of the first 15 meetings all-time. 

Sara Simpson picked up an assist on Saturday, giving her the team lead with 11 points (4 goals, three assists). Simpson has five points in the last three matches and seven in the last five. Catie Smith scored her first goal of her career on Thursday and each goalie, Jordan Broadway and Sydney Fontenot, has one win on the season.

The Blue Hose split its games over the week, capturing its second Big South win with a 2-1 home victory over Charleston Southern before falling to Coastal Carolina on Saturday morning, 6-1. Jordan Broadway made nine saves in the first half on Saturday against the Chanticleers.

The Blue Hose end the regular season on Tuesday, October 23, with a 7 p.m. home contest against UNC Asheville.
