CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men's soccer team dropped
a Big South Conference match to Winthrop on Tuesday night, falling to the
Eagles by a 2-0 tally.
Winthrop (6-5-0, 2-1-0 Big South) used two Achille Obougou
goals to slip past PC (3-10-0, 2-3-0).
PC next hosts Liberty on Friday evening at 5 p.m. The
program will present the new additions to Martin Stadium at halftime.
The Blue Hose took 17 shots on the night, tying a
season-high. Five came from the foot of Byron Quinatoa (Santo Domingo de los
Colorados, Ecuador) and Ignacio Monchetti (Montevideo, Uruguay) notched four.
Each player registered a shot of goal, two of PC's five against the Eagles.
PC goalkeeper Tyler Beadle stopped nine shots on the night,
including five in the second half.
The Blue Hose created a number of chances in the opening
half. Quinatoa tested goalkeeper Enrique Miranda shortly after the opening
whistle with a long shot, probing the netminder who came out far off of his
line.
Obougou struck for his first goal in the 22nd
minute, finishing off an Alex Isern pass in the box to give the Eagles a 1-0
advantage.
PC continued to find opportunities, including a one-minute
span that featured four corner kicks. The team's best chance of the half came
with seven minutes before halftime. Jared Carter (Huntsville, Ala.) played a
ball to Monchetti, who ripped a shot that broke wide of the right post by a few
inches.
Josh Carter (Anchorage, Alaska.) stretched the Winthrop defense
with long runs throughout the match. He managed to slip a cross past the keeper
in the first half but could not find a Blue Hose to finish the chance.
In the second half, Beadle stopped two Obougou shots before
the Eagle broke through in the 58th minute. Josh Mort sent in a long
throw-in that Beadle punched out of the goal box, and Obougou corralled the
ball and launched a hard shot that gave Winthrop its final 2-0 score.
Matt Manter (Columbia, S.C.) tallied a shot on goal in the 84th
minute, but Enrique made the save as Winthrop held on for the win.
