CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College football team
dropped a Senior Day matchup to visiting Coastal Carolina on Saturday afternoon
at Bailey Memorial Stadium, 65-7.
PC moves to 2-8 overall and 0-5 in the Big South and will travel
to Gardner-Webb next Saturday for its regular season finale at 1:30 p.m.
The Chanticleers took a 44-7 lead into halftime en route to
the win.
Kaleb Griffin (Florence, S.C.) led PC through the air, going
10-for-22 for 88 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Senior Lance Byrd
moved the Blue Hose on the ground, tallying 87 yards on 14 carries. Jordan Hallums (Mauldin, S.C.) grabbed PC's lone touchdown with a long reception in
the second quarter.
On defense, Isaiah Lynn (Fort Lawn, S.C.) turned in 10
tackles—three for a loss—and an interception on the day. LJ Perry (Augusta,
Ga.) also combined for eight tackles, one and a half for a loss.
Coastal's Aramis Hillary threw for 261 yards and five
touchdowns on a 19-for-22 day. The Blue Hose picked off one of Hillary's passes
in the second quarter that led to a PC touchdown. Marcus Whitener gained 144
yards on the ground with two touchdowns while Matt Hazel hauled in six catches,
two going for scores.
Coastal Carolina struck quickly, stringing together a nine-play,
72-yard opening drive that ended with a 10-yard Hillary touchdown pass to Kenny
Jones. An Austin Cain jump pass on the two-point conversion put the
Chanticleers up by eight early on.
Coastal then forced a three-and-out and a punt for the Blue
Hose, which Niccolo Mastromateo returned 87 yards for a Chanticleer touchdown.
The visitors then led 15-0 with 10:03 left in the first quarter.
The Chanticleers capped another 70-plus yard drive on their
next possession, as Hillary completed a 23-yard pass to Matt Hazel that took Coastal
into the second quarter with a 22-0 tally.
PC found an answer, with the defense setting up the offense.
A Lynn interception stopped a Coastal series and gave the Blue Hose the ball at
their own 24-yard-line. Five plays later, Kaleb Griffin found the freshman Hallums
for a 57-yard touchdown pass, the first score of the freshman's career.
Coastal responded with a two long passing touchdowns of its
own. Hillary connected with David Duran for a 43-yard score on the next drive
before Harris found DeMario Bennett on a 50-yard touchdown to lead 36-7, with
7:45 left before halftime.
Another Harris-to-Hazel connection handed the Chanticleers a
44-7 advantage heading into halftime.
Punter Stephen Doar (Landrum, S.C.) got his first taste of
collegiate action on Saturday, handling most of the punting duties for the Blue
Hose. The redshirt freshman turned in an impressive outing, tallying five punts
for 240 yards, averaging 48.0 yards per punt. His longest came on a 60-yarder
and one pinned the Chanticleers inside their own 20.
The Chanticleers converted on their first drive of the second
half. The visitors turned an eight-play, 80-yard drive into seven points thanks
to a Marcus Whitener four-yard rush that extended the team's lead to 51-7.
An interception then set up a 61-yard Whitener touchdown
rush to make the score 58-7 in favor of the visitors with 2:46 left in the
third quarter.
The Chanticleers put together a 13-play drive—with 12 plays
coming on the ground—that ended as Alex Ross faked a handoff and ran it in from 10 yards
out. The play capped the day's scoring, putting Coastal ahead by a 65-7 margin midway
through the final quarter.

Bailey (Covington, Ga.), Trent Bailey (Enoree, S.C.), Xavier Boatright
(Manning, S.C.), Lance Byrd (Jacksonville, Fla.), Ellis Hammond (Moncks Corner,
S.C.), Derl Howard (Los Angeles, Calif.), Aaron Mayes (Blythewood, S.C.),
Patrick Morgano (Greenville, S.C.), Greg Palmer (Flowery Branch, Ga.), Michael
Ruff (Whitmire, S.C.), J.J. Russell (Alpharetta, Ga.), Antarius Terrell
(Covington, Ga.), Joe Wideman (Belton, S.C.) and Mark Williams (Lithia Springs,
Ga.) prior to the opening kickoff.
