ATHENS, Ga. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball
team suffered its first loss of the season with a road defeat at No. 10 Georgia
on Wednesday evening, 66-38.
Jasmine Hassell scored 14 points for Georgia (2-0) and
pulled in nine rebounds to help defeat PC (1-1), who will wrap up its season-opening
three-game road swing at No. 3 Duke on Saturday.
Shonda Burnside (Gray Court, S.C.) scored eight points to
lead the Blue Hose. She also collected four rebounds, as did Keyonna Allen
(Forest Park, Ga.). Allen's four boards—two on the offensive end—set a new career high for the redshirt
freshman.
Chelsea Parker (Asheville, N.C.) paced the Blue Hose on the
glass with five rebounds, marking the first time the senior has led the squad in
that category.
The Bulldogs went 24-for-64 from the field for 38.7 percent
shooting, a lower total than in their season opener against Rutgers. PC shot
34.1 percent from the field (15-for-44), a new season-high.
Georgia steadily built a first half lead, taking advantage
of early turnovers and knocking down four three-pointers in the period.
Taylor displayed a hot hand from the beginning, hitting a
three to put PC's first points on the board. She finished the game with seven
points. Pietrowski also poured in six points in the opening 20 minutes.
Kasey Hobbie (Spring Lake, N.J.) sunk her first career shot
early in the first half, heaving a trey five feet behind the arc to beat an
expiring shot clock. Hobbie added another three to finish with a career-high
six points in five minutes of play.
PC hung tough with the Bulldogs in the first half. An
inbounds bounce pass from Noelle Carter (Neptune, N.J.) to Burnside allowed the
senior forward to go strong to the hoop and cut the Georgia lead to six midway
through the half, 16-10.
Taylor hit her second three to make the score 18-13, but the
Bulldogs strung together a 17-5 run to head into the locker room at halftime with
a 35-18 lead.
The Bulldogs continued to pull away in the second despite strong
plays from the Blue Hose. Carter drove hard to the basket for two of her four
points and Burnside chipped in six points as well.
PC held Georgia to fewer points in the second half than in
the first and 34.4 percent shooting.
Senior Olivia Towers-Solis (Dacula, Ga.) and junior Megan
Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md.) made their first appearances of the season in the
contest.
Freshmen Cassidy Glenn (Blue Island, Ill.), Taryn Richard
(Palm City, Fla.) and Katelyn Grisillo (Charleston, S.C.) also made their first
career appearances. Grisillo made the most of her three minutes of action by
hitting a jumper, stealing a ball and hauling in a rebound.
