CONWAY, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men's soccer team
fell in its Big South Conference Men's Soccer Championship quarterfinal match
at top-seeded Coastal Carolina on Tuesday night, 5-0.
PC ends its season at 4-16-0 on the year, matching the most
wins in a season since 2007.
Coastal Carolina improves to 17-1-2 in league
matches. The Chanticleers will take on the winner of High Point and Campbell's
Tuesday match in the semifinal.
Goalkeeper Tyler Beadle (Douglasville, Ga.) stopped 11 shots
on the night, the fourth time the redshirt junior has tallied over 10 saves in
a match this season. Beadle made eight saves in the opening period—many on
speedy, difficult shots—to keep the Blue Hose in the game.
The Chanticleers broke though in the 20th minute
when Ricky Garbanzo cleaned up a rebound off of Beadle's fifth save of the night.
Ashton Bennett fired a shot from in close that the goalkeeper kept out, but the
ball bounced off the crossbar to Garbanzo and the forward finished to put the home
side ahead, 1-0.
Coastal Carolina struck again 5:17 before the halftime
whistle as Sean McCormick slid in and directed a Shawn McLaws cross into the
net to give the Chanticleers a 2-0 lead at intermission.
PC played with a man down after a send-off in the 28th
minute and suffered another ejection in the 60th minute as the
shorthanded Blue Hose continued to battle.
The home side found the back of the net 4:18 after halftime as Ashton Bennett punched in a Sean McCormick cross into the box to
extend Coastal Carolina's advantage.
Coastal Carolina added to its total in the 58th
minute as Henrik Robstad headed in a ball from a Jhamie Hyde service, just
avoiding a leaping challenge from Beadle in the goal box.
Matt Risher capped the scoring with an unassisted tally in the
74th minute to seal the victory.
Byron Quinatoa (Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador)
tallied a shot for the Blue Hose on a free kick.
Two more red cards for the Blue Hose whittled the visitors'
numbers down, but PC soldiered on in pursuit of a goal.
Newt Turk (Cornelia, Ga.), Brett Godwin (Suwanee, Ga.), Matt
Manter (Columbia, S.C.) and Pachinno Roberts (Powder Springs, Ga.) played all
90 minutes in a display of toughness and stamina during the team's season
finale.
