CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College men's tennis team began its spring season in style, rolling past the Citadel on Saturday, 5-2.
PC moves to 3-0 overall on the year after two dual wins in the fall. Citadel moves to 0-2.
The day provided several memorable finishes as well as doubles and singles wins for Rafael Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany), Edward Snead IV (Greenwood, S.C.), William O'Connell (Nadi, Fiji) and Zachary Sprouse (Hilton Head, S.C.).
PC took the doubles point with all three Blue Hose pairs earning wins. Berghaus and Grayson Mills (Lilburn, Ga.) battled to an 8-7 win over Josh Cook and David Orces at the top flight. At No. 2, O'Connell and Sprouse handled James Atkinson and Peter Bleach, 8-1, and Snead and Andrew Brigham (Birmingham, England) held off Elliott Sperr and Alex Howle at the third flight, 8-3.
In singles play, Berghaus dispatched Bleach in a marathon match at No. 2. After Bleach edged Berghaus in the first, the Blue Hose took the second by a 6-4 margin and outlasted the Bulldog in the third, 13-11.
In his first singles match as a member of the squad, O'Connell knocked off Cook at No. 3, 6-3, 6-2. Snead followed at the fourth flight with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Atkinson and Sprouse won over Howle, 6-2, 6-4.
At the top flight, Mills' match against Orces played out in a similar fashion to Berghaus-Bleach, only with the Bulldog coming out ahead. Mills took the first set, 7-5, only to fall in the second, 6-4. Mills battled in another thrilling third set but came up short, 13-11.
Ryan Walters (Augusta, Ga.) dropped a sixth-flight match to Sperr despite a hard-fought second set, 6-0, 7-5.
PC returns to action in a Blue Hose tennis doubleheader against Young Harris on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
