Softball Sweeps Doubleheader over Charleston Southern

Presbyterian College used two three-run home runs to take the 6-1 win in game one and held on to the 2-1 win in the second game as the Blue Hose softball team earned the doubleheader sweep over Charleston Southern this afternoon in Charleston, S.C.

The Blue Hose improved to 10-19 overall and 2-4 in the Big South.  Charleston Southern dropped to 19-16, 4-3.

After three and a half scoreless innings Charleston Southern brought in the first run of the game in the bottom or the fourth.  With two out and a runner on first, Linzy Rother hit a double to centerfield to drive in a run to make it 1-0, Bucs.

The CSU lead wouldn't last as PC recorded three in the top of the fifth.  With one out Tera Powell single to center and advanced to second after Jill McLean walked the next at-bat.  Cat Tarvin stepped up to the plate and hit a three-run home run, the first of her PC career, as the Blue Hose took the 3-1 lead.

The Blue Hose spotted three more in the top of the seventh after McLean opened the stanza with a bunt single, which was followed by another bunt single, this one from Tarvin, to put runners on first and second.  They both came home the next at-bat as Shelby Petik hit a three-run shot, the second of her career, over the right center wall to make it 6-1 in favor of PC.

Charleston southern attempted a comeback and had bases loaded with no outs before Leslie Hensley retired the next three batters to end the threat and pick up her sixth win of the season (6-10).  She scattered nine hits and surrendered one earned run in 7.0 innings.

Morgan Dowdy gave up six hits and three earned runs to take the loss and go to 12-8 on the year for Charleston Southern.  Rother paced the team offensively going two for three with one RBI.

Petik and Tarvin both went two-for-four with three RBI to lead the Blue Hose in game one.

Morgan Durham led off the second inning of the game two with a base hit to center and two batters later, Tricia Hood reached first on a CSU error as the Blue Hose put runners on first and third, after Durham stole third, with one out.  Hensley grounded out to third but drove in Durham, and Powell laced a double to left center to plate Hood as PC took the 2-0 lead.

Charleston Southern scored in the bottom of the fourth after a base hit by Jana Matthews brought home the Bucs lone run of the game.  Kensley Loudermelk proved to be quite effective on the mound, holding the Bucs to just six base runners as she scattered two hits and struck out six in 7.0 innings of work.  She improved to 4-4 on the year.

Dowdy took the loss again for the Bucs, throwing 7.0 innings, surrendering two runs off seven hits.

Powell led PC in the second game with a two-for-three effort and one RBI.  Matthews led CSU, going one for three with one RBI.

The third and final game of the series starts Saturday, Mar. 31 at 1 p.m.
