Women's Tennis Clips UNC Asheville in Big South Win, 4-3

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team earned its first Big South Conference win of the season with a thrilling 4-3 win over UNC Asheville on Thursday.

PC moves to 10-12 on the year and 1-6 in league action. The 10 wins mark a new Division I high for the program and head coach Catherine Dunagan also earns her first Big South win with the result. UNC Asheville falls to 6-15 and 0-8.

After losing the doubles point despite an 8-5 top-flight win from Paige Oelke (Athens, Ga.) and Patricia Alves (Campinas, Brazil) over Emily McNall and Christine Boissevain, PC won four singles matches to take the win.

At the sixth flight, Devon Cavanaugh defaulted to Lindsay Krause (Roswell, Ga.) to even the dual match at 1-1. Oelke then gave PC a leg up with a 6-1, 6-2 win over McNall at the top flight, her 12th singles win of the season and second Big South victory.

PC went up 3-1 as Caroline deLoach (Columbia, S.C) knocked off Amie Cloer at the fifth flight in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. The win gave the freshman her team-leading 13th singles win and third in league action.

The Blue Hose sealed the result when Alves dispatched Jenna Dodge at the fourth flight by a 6-2, 6-3 margin. The sophomore picked up her third Big South win as well and 12th overall singles victory.

With the decision in hand, PC made a hard-fought bid to win all six singles matches. Greer Ransom (Athens, Ga.) nearly took down Boissevain, battling the Bulldog through two sets and a tiebreaker. Boissevain won the first set, 7-6 (8-6), but Ransom forced more tennis by winning a 7-5 second set. In the 10-point tiebreaker, Boissevain held off the surging Blue Hose in a marathon contest, 11-9.

At the second flight, Amryn Soldier took a 6-4, 6-2 match over Cara Caruso (Roswell, Ga.).

The Blue Hose hit the road again on Friday for a 1 p.m. contest at Winthrop. The PC men's team takes on the Eagles an hour later at 2 p.m.
