Women's Tennis Caps Record Season with Defeat at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team ended the 2012 season with a road contest against Winthrop on Friday, falling to the Eagles by a 7-0 margin.

PC ends the season at 10-13 overall and 1-7 in Big South Conference play. The Blue Hose cap a record-setting season in which the squad set a new Division I-era record in wins (10) and achieved numerous individual accomplishments under head coach Catherine Dunagan's first year at the helm.

Winthrop improved to 12-10 on the year and 8-0 in league action. The Eagles swept all of the day's matches despite several hard-fought contests from the Blue Hose.

In doubles play at third flight, Lindsay Krause (Roswell, Ga.) and Cara Caruso (Roswell, Ga.) battled Ekin Gunaysu and Camille Amrani. The Blue Hose pair picked up four games but fell, 8-4.

Caruso and Paige Oelke (Athens, Ga.) see their PC tennis careers end at the top of the program's Division I lists. Oelke will leave as the school's leader in Division I singles wins (42) will Caruso leaves in second place (23). The two also top the doubles ledger, with Oelke's 33 wins and Caruso's 26.

Oelke's 14 singles wins this season also set a new Division I season-high for the Blue Hose. Caroline deLoach (Columbia, S.C.) established a new freshman D-I record, with 13 singles victories this season.

All three stumbled on Friday, as Oelke fell to Yasmine Alkema (6-2, 6-1), Caruso lost to Andressa Garcia (6-0, 6-1) and deLoach dropped a fifth-flight match to Gunaysu (6-0, 6-3).

In the day's other matches, Greer Ransom (Athens, Ga.) fell to Sandra Herrera (6-1, 6-2) while Patricia Alves (Campinas, Brazil) and Krause both suffered setbacks by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Alves (12-9 in singles play) and Caruso (9-14) both set high-water marks in single-season wins, as does Lucia Leahy (Charlotte, N.C.) at 5-7. Krause ends the campaign as the team's doubles leader, with 11 wins. Ransom also ends a solid freshman season, tallying six wins in singles play and four wins in doubles action.
