Leslie Hensley pitched a three-hit shutout to lead the Presbyterian College softball team to the 4-0 win over league-leading Radford in the first game of a doubleheader this afternoon in Radford, Va. The Highlanders scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to break open a 2-2 tie and take the 4-2 win over the Blue Hose in game two.
PC moved to 14-23 overall and 6-6 in the Big South, while Radford went to 23-13, 8-3.
In game one Hensley retired the first five batters before giving up a bunt single to Jackie Warr in the second inning. Hensley then surrendered a walk to open the third but sent home the next nine in a row. Hannah Ojeda singled to right field to start the sixth inning but was caught stealing second to end the threat.
Five batters later Hensley gave up just her third hit of the game, a single by Ryndee Ruch with two outs in the seventh. The next batter flew out to left as the Blue Hose took the shutout win.
Hensley pitched the complete game and scattered three hits with three strikeouts to go to 7-12 on the year. Jackie Jenkins started for Radford and went 3.2 innings, giving up two earned runs off six hits to earn her sixth loss of the season (9-6).
The Blue Hose scored their first of four runs in the third after Tera Powell singled down the left field line with two outs and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder. She came home off a base hit up the middle by Cat Tarvin, one of her two hits in the game, the next at-bat to give PC the 1-0 lead.
PC led off the fourth with a walk by Rachel Hopper. She was sacrificed over to second by Morgan Durham and plated when Mary Ellen Morris singled to center field. Two batters later, Hensley hit in Morris with a single to right and took second off a Radford error.
Hensley came home for the third run of the inning when Powell, who went two-for-four in the game, doubled to left to help PC to the 4-0 lead and eventual game one win.
PC recorded seven hits and no errors in the win, with Radford equaling its three hits with three errors.
After Radford opened the second game with a run in the bottom of the first, PC responded with two in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead. With one out, Morris singled to center field and advanced to second after Erin Taylor walked the next at-bat. After reaching third on a wild pitch, Morris scored off a Hensley RBI single.
Taylor scored two batters later when Tarvin, who went two-for-four, hit a RBI single to make it 2-1 in favor of the Blue Hose.
Radford tied it up in the bottom of the fourth inning off a solo home run by Ruch.
Nichole Beall led off the bottom of the firth with a double and reached third two batters later when Vicki Madden singled to left. Beall scored on a passed ball the next play.
Jessie Hutchens hit a RBI single three batters later to bring in pinch runner Jessica Agee and Radford led 4-2.
PC threatened in the top of the seventh after Powell opened the inning with a single. She was tagged out on a fielder's choice the next at-bat, however. Shelby Petik singled to left for PC's second hit of the inning, but the next two batters grounded out and lined out to end the threat and game.
Kensley Loudermelk pitched 4.1 innings, surrendering four runs off four hits with three strikeouts to take the loss (7-6). Stephanie Dameron picked up the win for Radford (6-0), coming in relief to throw 3.2 innings. She scattered three hits and struck out two. Micalah Sacre had a strong performance on the mound as the starter. She went 3.1 innings and struck out eight while giving up just four hits.
Both teams posted seven hits, with PC recording two errors in game two.
The two teams meet for the third and final time of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
