Chelsea Pineda hit two home runs, including a grand slam in the first inning, to lead the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers to the 8-0 win over the Presbyterian College softball team in the opening round of the 2012 Big South Tournament, sponsored by Musco Sports Lighting and Brookwood Farms BBQ.
Coastal Carolina, now 39-17 overall, will face either #3 Charleston Southern or #6 Liberty in the second round Friday, May 11 at 9 a.m. Presbyterian College, 19-32 on the year, will take on the loser of the CSU/Liberty game tonight at 9:30 p.m., in an elimination game.
Tera Powell led off the game with a walk and made it to second off the sacrifice bunt by Jill McLean. She wouldn't get any farther as Kiana Quolas struck out the next two batters end the top of the first inning.
With one out in the bottom of the first, Coastal Carolina's Brooke Donovan doubled to left field. She was followed by Kory Hayden who singled to the same spot, and Quodas who struck out for the second out. Cacia Pierre walked the next at-bat to load the bases for the Chanticleers.
Pineda stepped up to the plate, and with a 2-1 count cleared the bases with a grand slam to make it a 4-0 game in favor of the Chanticleers.
Erin Taylor tried to get things going in the top of the second with a single to left with one out on the board but the next two batters fouled out to the pitcher and third, respectively.
The Chanticleers recorded another double in the bottom of the second before Kensley Loudermelk came in for relief of Hensley. She proceeded to retire 10 of the next 12 batters, including six in a row in the fourth and fifth innings.
McLean recorded PC's second hit of the game with a two-out single in the fifth inning. Quolas ended the threat, striking out Cat Tarvin for the third out, however.
Pineda came through again for CCU in the bottom of the sixth with her second home run of the game, a solo shot over the right field wall, to give the Chanticleers the 5-0 lead.
Stacy Snellings drew a walk the next at-bat, with Sara Rasley bringing her home with a two-run home run the next at-bat to make it 7-0.
With two outs, Hayden singled up the middle and drove in Maples, who had reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third off a Donovan double, to make it 8-0. With the eight-run rule in effect, the game ended with the Chanticleers advancing through the winners' bracket.
Quolas moved to 23-8 after throwing the complete game, two-hit shutout. She struck out six and walked just one in the winning effort.
Leslie Hensley dropped to 10-16 on the year, surrendering five runs off seven hits in 2.0 innings of work. Loudermelk, who came in relief, threw 3.2 innings and allowed three runs off three hits. She posted five strikeouts in the loss.
Seven Coastal Carolina players had at least one hit in the game with Donovan, Hayden and Pineda recording two apiece. Pineda also added five RBI and two runs scored for her two-for-two effort.
