CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men's soccer team used
two unanswered goals to end home non-conference play on a high note Wednesday night,
knocking off visiting Georgia Southern by a 3-2 margin.
PC improves to 2-7-0 on the season while Georgia Southern
moves to 2-7-0 as well.
The Blue Hose rallied from a 2-1 deficit early in the second
half, taking advantage of a Nico Fazio (Roswell, Ga.) score in the 64th
minute and an Eagles own goal to take the win.
Ignacio Monchetti (Montevideo, Uruguay) opened the scoring
in the 15th minute. The sophomore bent a free kick from a yard
outside the goal box into the far side of the net, putting PC ahead. Monchetti
notched his team-leading second goal of the season on the play.
Georgia Southern evened the score in the 37th
minute as Reed Norton played a pass up to David Vargas Masis, who chipped a
shot high to tie the game, 1-1.
The Eagles went ahead nearly 14 minutes after halftime. An
Emmanuel Raji cross found Hunter Norton a few feet away from the net, but
goalkeeper Tyler Beadle (Douglasville, Ga.) stopped the immediate point-blank
shot. The ball bounced to Chase Park, however, who put the chance away to give
Georgia Southern their first and only lead, 2-1.
Beadle stopped a pair of shots in each half for four saves
on the night.
The Blue Hose caught the Eagles on Fazio's goal. Matt Manter
(Irmo, S.C.) sent a ball down the line for Byron Quinatoa (Santos Domingos de
los Colorados, Ecuador) in the Georgia Southern end. Quinatoa lofted a cross that
eventually found the feet of Fazio, who laced a high shot into the left corner to bring the score to
2-2. Manter's assist gave the freshman his first collegiate point.
PC continued to push the attack, matching the Eagles' five
shots in the second half. The pressure broke through in the 80th
minute as the Blue Hose created an opportunity that led to an own goal. Goalkeeper
Neal Bates came out to collect a contested ball, and Quinatoa jarred the ball
loose. In the ensuing scrum, defender Ciaran Fairman attempted a clear that
bounced backward and into the net to give PC the final goal it would need, 3-2.
The Blue Hose return to action on Saturday, resuming Big
South Conference play at No. 17 Coastal Carolina. The opening whistle is slated
for 3:30 p.m.
