The Presbyterian College men's tennis team used a win at doubles and three at singles to take the 4-3 win this afternoon over Appalachian State at the Deer Valley Racquet Club in Boone, N.C.
PC evens its overall record to 3-3 and earns its first win of the spring to go to 1-3. The Blue Hose pick up their first 4-3 win after suffering through two back to back 4-3 losses. The Mountaineers fall to 0-3 on the spring.
The Blue Hose opened the match by taking the doubles point as the duo of Rafael Berghaus and Grayson Mills won at the number one spot in a close 9-8 decision over Zach Bost and Sebastien King. Andrew Brigham and William O'Connell edged Steve Karendal and Andrew McKinnon, 8-6, to take number two doubles.
Earning wins at singles were Mills at number one, Brigham at number four and Danny Bruce at number six to give PC the victory.
Mills defeated King in a tightly contested match, 7-6, 7-5, while Brigham defeated McKinnon, 6-4, 6-4. After falling in the opening set, 7-5, Bruce turned around to take the next two sets, 6-4 and 6-3.
O'Connell dropped a close 6-4, 7-6 decision at number two to Bost, while Karendal defeated Berghaus, 7-6, 6-4 at number three singles. Matt Salstsgiver earned a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win over Gonzalo Asis at number five.
The Blue Hose are next in action Sat. Feb. 2 when they travel to Davidson, N.C., to take on Wingate at 12 p.m. and the Wildcats at 4 p.m., in a doubleheader.
