LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Presbyterian College men's soccer team dropped a Big South Conference road match on Friday night, stumbling against the Liberty Flames in a 3-1 defeat.
PC moves to 3-9-0 on the year and 1-4-0 in the Big South. The Blue Hose will next play on Wednesday at Winthrop in a 7 p.m. Big South matchup. Liberty improves to 7-5-0 on the year and 3-3-0 in the Big South.
Ignacio Monchetti (Montevideo, Uruguay) scored PC's goal, his fourth of the season. With the team down 3-0 late in the game, the junior fired a shot in the 83rd minute that hit the post and bounced out. Monchetti picked up the rebound and tucked another shot into the left side of the net to pull PC within two, 3-1.
Unfortunately for the Blue Hose, Liberty held on in the remaining minutes for the win. Monchetti tested Flames goalkeeper with another shot in the closing seconds but couldn't cut into Liberty's lead.
Liberty opened the scoring in the 11th minute before Ernest Siaw put the home side up 2-0 in the 35th minute.
After halftime, the Flames notched their third in the 56th minute on a Blessing Tahuona goal..
Monchetti led PC with three shots on the night and two on goal. Nico Fazio (Roswell, Ga.), Mason Lewis (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) and John Speed (Decatur, Ga.) each added a shot on goal in looking for a PC score. The Blue Hose fired five shots on goal to the Flames' six and created five corner kick opportunities to Liberty's four.
Goalkeeper Tyler Beadle (Douglasville, Ga.) made two saves on the night.
Monchetti's goal moves him to 10 points and four goals on the year, both ranking as the second-most on the team.
