Women's Soccer Tops Charleston Southern, 2-1

DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team picked up its second straight Big South Conference win with a 2-1 victory over Charleston Southern at Blackbaud Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

PC improves to 5-4-0 on the year and 2-1-0 in the League. The Blue Hose return home to host Liberty on Saturday night at 7 p.m. after the PC men's team welcomes VMI at 1 p.m. Charleston Southern falls to 3-7-1 and 0-3-0 in Conference action and play at UNC Asheville on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Blue Hose needed just 10 minutes to find the scoreboard on the first corner kick of the afternoon. Stephanie Allen (Augusta, Ga.) lifted a kick into the box that found Brittany Whitson (Conyers, Ga.) and the senior deposited the ball in the net to give PC an early 1-0 lead. The score marks Whitson's second of the season.

Nearly 30 minutes later, PC struck again. Sophie Cobb (Columbia, S.C.) lifted a long pass over the back line to Kristen Peagler (Lithonia, Ga.), who timed her run to tap the ball past Buccaneers goalkeeper Caitlin Cody. The goal also gave Peagler two on the year and extended PC's lead to 2-0 going into halftime.

Charleston Southern broke though in the 76th minute. A cross into the box from Erica Gazzani landed at the foot of Allison Lewis, who ripped a shot high into the net to make the score 2-1 in favor of the visitors.

A couple of key defensive plays helped PC secure the victory. Hannah Gaither (Statesville, N.C.) headed a ball off the goal line following a Charleston Southern corner kick before the Buccaneers' score and goalkeeper Sydney Fontenot (Austin, Texas) robbed forward Chelsea Frankeny late in the game. Frankeny charged into the PC end all alone on a breakaway, but Fontenot met the Buccaneer at the top of the box and grabbed the ball off of her foot to halt one of the best scoring chances of the afternoon.

PC goalkeeper Jordan Broadway (Chapin, S.C.) started the game and made six saves in 45 shutout minutes. Fontenot stopped four shots in the second half as the Buccaneers ramped up their attack and outshot PC eight to six in the final period.

Charleston Southern's Emma Faubert led the team with five shots—four on goal—while goalkeeper Cody stopped five shots.
